Hansi Flick Expresses Surprise as Barcelona Secure Gabriel Jesus for €10 Million from Arsenal

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick admitted he was caught off guard after the club completed the transfer of Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal for just €10 million on deadline day. The Brazilian forward, aged 29, joined the Catalan side on a two-year contract, becoming Barca's sixth signing of the summer window.

Jesus Joins Barca After Travel to Catalonia

Jesus arrived in Catalonia on Monday to finalize his move and was seen at Camp Nou witnessing Barcelona's dominant 5-2 victory over Rayo Vallecano. That win extended Barcelona's perfect start to the new LaLiga season with three straight wins. The club plans to officially unveil Jesus on Tuesday.

Flick Reacts to Low Transfer Fee

The modest transfer fee took Hansi Flick by surprise. He shared with ESPN that he did not expect Arsenal to allow their striker to leave so late in the window. Flick expressed admiration for Jesus’ playing style, saying it matches Barcelona’s approach and that he expects Jesus to be a valuable asset in upcoming matches.

"I was a little surprised we had the opportunity to get him," Flick said. "I really love him, I like his style to play football, it fits with our style. I think he can help us a lot in the games."

Deco Praised for Key Role in Recruitment

Sporting director Deco has overseen an active summer, bringing in several key players such as Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Rodri, Joao Cancelo, and Dominik Livakovic. Flick highlighted Deco’s instrumental work in securing Jesus’ transfer.

"For us, he can be an important player, so thanks to Deco because again he made an excellent job," Flick stated.

Barcelona had also tried to sign Julian Alvarez but were blocked by domestic rivals Atletico Madrid who refused negotiations.

Deadline Day Unlikely to Bring More Signings

Although Barcelona are still open to signing a centre-back before the transfer window closes Tuesday evening, time is running short. Flick was cautious when asked about potential last-minute additions.

"I don't think so, but we will see," Flick said when questioned about further arrivals within 24 hours.

With Jesus now part of the squad, Barcelona will refocus on LaLiga action as they prepare to face Valencia at Mestalla.
