Barcelona Await Julian Alvarez's Decision on Transfer

Barcelona’s summer rebuild has reached its most delicate point. The champions have moved quickly on several fronts, but the biggest question of their window now hangs on one man: Julian Alvarez.

Rodri and Joao Cancelo are close to being wrapped up, the club has already banked €50 million from Ferran Torres’ sale, and the outline of Hansi Flick’s new-look side is starting to appear. The missing piece is the centre-forward. And Barcelona have made it clear they want that piece to be Alvarez.

This is the week that will decide it.

Alvarez meeting to define his future

All eyes in Barcelona are fixed on Madrid, where Alvarez is expected to sit down with Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin in the coming days. That meeting has been pushed back more than once, but there is no room left for delays now.

Alvarez’s intention is straightforward: he wants to unblock the situation and convince Atletico to sit at the table with Barcelona. The Argentine believes Gil Marin gave him a clear promise — that if he wanted to leave this summer, the club would not stand in his way.

Now he wants that promise honoured.

Barcelona, for their part, are waiting. The next move is in Alvarez’s hands. Either he forces Atletico to open negotiations, or the Catalan club will walk away and redirect their search for a No. 9.

No more time to waste

Inside Barcelona, there is a firm line: this week cannot pass without a definitive answer. The sporting department will either push ahead with a transfer, if Atletico finally agree to talk numbers, or close the Alvarez file and turn to the next option.

The context around Atletico adds another layer. Diego Simeone’s side will play two home matches this week, against Malaga and Villarreal. The reaction of the Metropolitano crowd to Alvarez — and to any hint of a move — could weigh heavily on how the club’s hierarchy handle the case.

If the atmosphere turns, pressure will grow. If it doesn’t, Atletico may feel emboldened to hold their ground.

Deco and Flick’s Plan B

Barcelona cannot afford to drift. If Alvarez becomes unattainable, Deco and Hansi Flick will have to decide, quickly, what kind of striker they want and how much they are willing to change their plans.

Several names are already circulating as potential alternatives: Lautaro Martínez, Mikel Oyarzabal, Luis Suarez and Viktor Gyokeres have all been mentioned in recent days. For now, though, they remain just that — names. Barcelona have not made a concrete move for any of them while the Alvarez situation remains unresolved.

There is also a more radical option on the table: not signing a traditional striker at all.

Flick has multiple players in the current squad capable of operating as a false nine. Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Raphinha, Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon can all step into that role, offering mobility and interchange rather than a fixed reference point up front.

Behind them, the club is quietly encouraged by the emergence of academy talents. Hamza Abdelkarim and Jesse Bisiwu have both impressed in pre-season, showing an eye for goal and a maturity that has not gone unnoticed.

For now, though, everything is blocked by one decision. Barcelona have done their homework, set their limits and cleared space in the squad.

The next step belongs to Julian Alvarez — and whatever he decides this week will shape the face of Barcelona’s attack for the season ahead.
