Barcelona Pursues Julián Álvarez Amid Raphinha's Scoring Surge

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are still staring each other down over Julián Álvarez. Nobody is blinking.

Barcelona want the Argentine forward. Badly. Atletico, for now, won’t even sit at the negotiating table. The stand-off has dragged on long enough to become a full-blown war of words between the two clubs, and there is no sign of a truce.

Yet inside Barcelona, the mood is far from anxious.

According to Spanish newspaper El País, Raphinha is steadily proving Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco right. Before the window really heated up, the pair had reached a clear conclusion: if neither Álvarez nor Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martínez could be prised away, there was no striker on the market who would genuinely improve what they already had.

They went after Álvarez anyway. They still are. Their insistence has irritated Atletico, who have grown tired of the noise around a player they do not intend to lose.

Deco also made a tentative enquiry to Inter over Lautaro. That conversation ended almost as soon as it began. The response from Milan convinced him quickly: chasing Lautaro was a dead end.

So Barcelona turned back to what was already in their dressing room.

Raphinha, usually deployed wide, was pushed into the role of out-and-out striker in the Liga opener against Elche. He did not just cope. He scored twice. Flick went back to the same plan against Athletic Bilbao. Raphinha found the net again.

The Brazilian has given Flick something more valuable than any press conference line: evidence.

The coach kept his message simple when asked about the positional switch. “I do not care in which position Raphinha plays, what matters to me is what he shows on the pitch. The fans connect with him and with the team. We have a great atmosphere, and that is the most important thing. What matters is how the press begins.”

The message was clear. Performances first. Debates about roles and labels later.

Even as reports harden around the likelihood that Barcelona will not land Álvarez, Flick refuses to be dragged into the transfer storm. “I do not want to comment on matters of this kind. We won our second match in a row, and that is what matters to me,” he said, batting away the speculation.

While the saga rumbles on, Barcelona’s actual business on the pitch and in the market looks more settled. Without Julián, the headline arrival of the summer remains Rodri, who drew warm applause from the Camp Nou crowd, as highlighted by El País.

The noise around Álvarez may continue. Atletico may keep the door shut. But as long as Raphinha keeps scoring and the wins keep stacking up, the real question for Barcelona is simple: do they still need the striker they’re fighting for?
