Barcelona Pursues Rashford as United Faces Tough Decision
Marcus Rashford is back in Manchester United red, training under Michael Carrick and officially reintegrated into the first‑team squad. On paper, his Old Trafford story has restarted.
In reality, it might only be a pause.
Barcelona have not walked away. Far from it. The Catalan club remain in contact with Rashford’s representatives, still sounding out a deal that could drag the England forward back to the Nou Camp in one of the window’s most dramatic late twists.
This comes after a curious summer turn. Rashford spent last season in Barcelona colours and delivered: 28 goal contributions across all competitions. The loan came with a €30m (£26m/$35m) option to buy. Barcelona declined to trigger it.
They had always favoured another loan, wary of committing a big fee while the forward still had two years left on his United contract. United, for their part, drew a hard line. No more loans. Only a permanent sale would be entertained.
So Rashford returned.
He is now back at Old Trafford as the club’s highest‑paid player, a huge wage packet United are currently prepared to carry. Carrick and his staff have brought him back into the fold and are open to using him this season. Teammates, as has been reported, hope he stays.
But the window is still open. And that changes everything.
Barcelona’s attack in flux
Since last season ended, Barcelona’s need for firepower has only grown. Rashford’s loan expired and he went back to England. Robert Lewandowski has gone. Ferran Torres has gone. Roony Bardghji, a key part of their planning, has been ruled out for the season with injury.
They have moved quickly in some areas. Anthony Gordon has arrived. So has Karim Adeyemi. The rebuild up front is under way, yet the feeling inside the club is that the job is not done. That is why the line to Rashford’s camp has stayed open.
Rashford, for his part, would not resist the idea. He would “readily” return to Catalunya, sources say. The question is not his willingness. It is whether United are prepared to soften their stance.
Would they accept a loan with an obligation to buy? That remains unclear. United’s hierarchy are still wrestling with the numbers and the optics of losing a homegrown star who, at his best, is one of the Premier League’s most devastating forwards.
Alvarez stalemate keeps Rashford in play
Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez only adds another layer.
The Catalan club are still working on a deal for the Argentinian international, but Atletico Madrid have dug in. The message from the Spanish capital has been consistent: not for sale. No compromise, no discount, no encouragement.
That stalemate is boxing Barcelona in. As long as Atletico refuse to budge, Rashford stays firmly on their radar. If they cannot break Atletico’s resistance, the temptation to push harder for Rashford grows.
For United, the calculation is more complex. They have their man back, they have a coach ready to use him, and they have committed – for now – to one of the biggest wage bills in the division. Yet inside the club, there is still debate over whether that is sustainable or sensible in the long term.
If Barcelona, or another heavyweight, eventually table a package that works financially, the mood could shift quickly.
For the moment, Rashford is a Manchester United player, training at Carrington and preparing for the season ahead.
Barcelona, though, have left the door ajar. And in a window this volatile, that is often all it takes.
