Juventus Sign Guglielmo Vicario on Loan from Tottenham

Juventus have turned away from Emiliano Martínez and moved decisively for Guglielmo Vicario, striking a deal with Tottenham for the goalkeeper to join on an initial loan.

The agreement sends Vicario to Turin with an option for Juventus to make the move permanent next year for £8.6m, a sharp drop from the £17.2m Spurs paid to bring him to north London in 2023. His exit comes after he lost his status as Roberto De Zerbi’s first-choice goalkeeper to Antonin Kinsky.

Juventus change course after Martínez bid rejected

For weeks, Juventus had circled Martínez as their preferred option. Aston Villa’s decision to move for Parma’s Zion Suzuki in a deal worth around £30m only fuelled the expectation that the Argentina international might be on the move.

Juventus tested Villa’s resolve with a €10m offer over the weekend. It was rejected. With Martínez currently out with a finger injury and no willingness from Villa to negotiate at that level, the Italian club pivoted.

Vicario, proven in Serie A and now displaced at Spurs, became the obvious target. Talks moved quickly, and Juventus now have a relatively low-cost route to secure the Italy international long term if he impresses.

De Zerbi reshapes Spurs squad

Vicario’s departure is part of a wider reset under De Zerbi. Since arriving in 2023, the 29-year-old has racked up almost 120 appearances for Spurs, but the goalkeeping hierarchy has shifted. Kinsky has taken the No 1 shirt, and Martin Dubravka has arrived on a free transfer to provide cover.

The consequence is a clear-out. Vicario follows Cristian Romero, Djed Spence, Will Lankshear and Yves Bissouma out of the club this summer, as De Zerbi trims and reshapes his squad. Pape Matar Sarr could be next: Everton and Nottingham Forest both want the Senegal midfielder, who is valued at £30m.

Spurs, though, are not just selling. They have already spent more than £200m on six new signings in this window, a statement of intent that underlines De Zerbi’s influence and the club’s urgency to close the gap to the Premier League’s elite.

Attack next on Spurs’ agenda

Attention now turns to the front line. Spurs are keen on Savinho from Manchester City, with the Brazil forward left out of Enzo Maresca’s squad for the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal in Cardiff. He is thought to be open to the move, and his omission only sharpened speculation.

Cody Gakpo remains another prominent name on their list. Spurs have been heavily linked with the Liverpool forward as De Zerbi looks for extra firepower and versatility in attack.

Juventus, meanwhile, will hand Vicario a fresh stage and a familiar league. If he seizes it, that £8.6m option could look like one of the more astute pieces of business in a frantic summer.
