Barcelona’s move for Rodri is still alive, but it is turning into a test of nerve as much as finance.

Manchester City have already turned down Barça’s second bid: €60 million guaranteed, plus add-ons that could have taken the package to €70m. The Premier League champions are standing their ground, demanding a fixed fee somewhere between €70m and €80m for a midfielder who, crucially, has just one year left on his contract.

According to SPORT, Barcelona believe they have already stretched their finances close to breaking point. The latest rejected proposal – €60m fixed and €10m in variables – went in on Wednesday and came back with a firm “no”. The door, though, has not been slammed shut.

Inside the club, work is now focused on what they view as a definitive bid. The Catalans are preparing to go up to around €65m as a guaranteed fee, with a further €10m in bonuses.

Not all of those variables are equal. Around €5m would be tied to targets considered relatively achievable. The remaining €5m would be attached to more demanding conditions, harder to trigger and therefore more palatable for a selling club keen to protect its valuation.

That structure could be the one that finally breaks City’s resistance. Barcelona want the offer ready within hours, hoping to close an agreement quickly enough for Rodri to skip a return to Manchester altogether.

Time is tight. Rodri is currently due back in Manchester on Friday, but his clear preference is to fly straight to Barcelona if the clubs can settle on a fee in time.

The midfielder is fully aligned with Barça’s push. Aware of the financial strain the operation places on the Catalan side, he has agreed to concessions in his own contract terms. He has walked away from certain sums that Real Madrid were prepared to put on the table, underlining that his choice is driven by sporting and personal priorities rather than purely financial ones.

His stance matters. Rodri has already asked City to ease his exit and facilitate the move. That pressure from the player’s side could prove decisive in the final hours of negotiation.

Publicly, Manchester City maintain that they are prepared to keep Rodri for the final year of his deal. Their moves in the market tell a different story.
