Barcelona's Renewal Battle Under Flick: Young Talents Secured

The transfer window is closed, but Barcelona are still busy. The big-money signings are through the door; now the club have turned inwards, moving quickly to lock down the young core that has forced its way into Hansi Flick’s plans.

It has been a heavy summer. As reported by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barça landed six major signings: Rodri, Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Gabriel Jesus, Joao Cancelo and the highly rated Jesse Bisheo. That kind of business usually signals the end of a club’s market activity.

Not this time.

With Flick handing more responsibility to a wave of young players, the sporting department has shifted focus. The message is clear: if you deliver, you get rewarded. And this group is very young.

Abdelkarim sets the tone

Leading the way is Hamza Abdelkarim, just 18, who used pre-season to announce himself as a pure No 9. He didn’t just impress; he convinced people inside the club that he can be part of the present, not just the future.

Barcelona have already moved on him. Abdelkarim has earned a pay rise, a higher release clause and an extra year on his contract, which now runs until 2030. It is a strong statement: the club do not want anyone testing their resolve on a player they see as a long-term striker option.

That deal is the template for what comes next.

Bernal ready for the next step

Four more youngsters are in line for improved terms. Two of them already carry serious weight in Flick’s rotations: Marc Bernal, 19, and Gerard Martin, 24.

Bernal is tied down until 2029, but that contract is already being revisited. Talks have started with the sporting management over a salary increase, a process that was effectively promised to him.

When Bernal suffered a knee injury, Barcelona backed him. They improved his deal at the time and raised his release clause to 500 million euros, with a verbal commitment to look at it again if he performed once he returned.

He has done exactly that since coming back. Now the club are acting. Deco has already spoken with his agent, Raul Verdu, to move the renewal forward and align his wages with his growing importance.

Martin next in line

Gerard Martin is another player Flick trusts. The 24-year-old, under contract until 2028, currently has a 100 million euro release clause, but Barcelona are not satisfied with that security level.

The plan is simple: extend his stay, increase his salary and push that clause higher. Martin knows where the club stand and understands that they see him as part of the medium-term structure under Flick.

This is not just housekeeping; it is protection. The more he plays, the more eyes he attracts. Barça want to stay ahead of that curve.

Espart, Flick’s big gamble

On the renewal list as well is Xavi Espart, 19, described internally as Flick’s biggest gamble this season.

Espart arrived in 2025 on a contract until 2028, but those terms reflected his status at the time: a reserve-team player, not a first-team regular. That reality has changed. He now wears a first-team number and trains and competes as one of Flick’s own.

His salary has not caught up yet. Barcelona intend to fix that. His agent is the same as Ferran Torres’s, a detail that can complicate some negotiations, but the club do not anticipate major problems in getting this extension signed.

For Espart, the renewal would be a formal confirmation of what his shirt number already says: he belongs at this level.

Farinas stays, and now must be paid like it

The final name on the current list is Bryan Farinas, 20. His situation almost took a different turn this summer.

Farinas, under contract until 2028, came close to joining Girona. Then Frenkie de Jong got injured, and Flick intervened. The coach chose to keep Farinas, hand him a first-team number and trust him as part of the squad instead of letting him leave.

There is a catch: he is still on a reserve-team salary. That no longer fits his role. Barcelona intend to adjust his pay and extend his contract, with expectations that he will sign on until 2031.

From almost leaving on loan to potentially staying another seven years — Farinas is the clearest example of how quickly a career can pivot under a coach willing to bet on youth.

The big-name arrivals have dominated the headlines, but inside the club, this second phase of the summer may prove just as decisive. Flick has his stars. Now Barcelona are racing to make sure the kids who earned his trust are tied down for the long haul.
