Barcelona's Rodri Debut Delayed Ahead of Bilbao Clash
Barcelona will have to wait to unveil their marquee midfield signing.
Hansi Flick confirmed on Saturday that Rodri, brought in from Manchester City in a blockbuster deal, will not feature in the Spanish champions’ La Liga opener away to Elche on Sunday.
Rodri on hold, Bilbao in sight
The plan is set, and Flick did not dress it up.
"He's very concentrated, focused, our plan is that he will arrive on Monday with the team," the Barcelona coach told reporters. The target is clear: Rodri’s debut is far more likely to come in the second league game, at home to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, once he has trained with his new teammates.
Barca moved decisively to secure the Spanish World Cup winner, agreeing a fee that could climb to 76.5 million euros ($89 million) to reinforce the heart of their midfield. Flick did not hide his enthusiasm.
"He's a fantastic player, a leader, and his personality is very great," he said, underlining the expectation that Rodri will anchor this new-look side.
Striker puzzle after Lewandowski and Torres exits
The midfield might be taking shape, but the attack remains a live issue. With Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres both gone, Barcelona enter the season still searching the market for a new centre-forward.
Flick kept his cards close to his chest when asked who would lead the line at the Martinez Valero. He did, however, shine a light on one surprise contender: 18-year-old Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim.
"Hamza is having a really great pre-season," Flick said. "He's a number nine, he's young, and he has a lot of potential, and also he scored goals. This is the important thing when you're playing in this position, and he made a great job."
Four goals in friendlies have thrust the teenager into the conversation, at a time when opportunities in Barcelona’s front line are suddenly wide open.
False nines and fresh options
If Flick opts against throwing Abdelkarim straight into a league opener, he still has a range of flexible solutions. New signings Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, both natural wingers, can operate through the middle as false nines. So can Raphinha and Dani Olmo, giving Barcelona a rotating cast of mobile forwards rather than a traditional target man.
The shape of Barca’s attack in Elche may offer the first real clue as to how Flick intends to replace Lewandowski’s goals and presence over the longer term.
Cancelo ready to go
One newcomer will be available immediately. Joao Cancelo, signed this week to strengthen the flanks, has been cleared to play and will travel to the Martinez Valero.
"He's ready to play. He has unbelievable technique and a lot of passion," Flick said, welcoming another versatile, attack-minded full-back into his system.
Rodri must wait. Cancelo will not. And as Barcelona kick off their title defence still hunting a striker, Flick’s first line-up of the season will say plenty about the identity he wants this team to carry into a new era.
