Barcelona's Defensive Plans: Three Candidates to Replace Ronald Araújo

Barcelona have moved quickly to redraw their defensive plans, with a three-man shortlist now in place to plug the gap left by Ronald Araújo’s departure.

According to Diario Sport, the Spanish champions have identified Aymeric Laporte, Castello Lukeba and Natan as the leading candidates to reinforce the centre of Hansi Flick’s backline in the final weeks of the transfer window.

Araújo’s decision to swap Catalonia for the Premier League and Liverpool has ripped out a cornerstone of Barça’s defence. Overnight, what looked like a position of strength has become a problem area, forcing sporting director Deco and his recruitment team into an urgent trawl of the market.

The response has been swift. The club’s search for a new stopper now revolves around three profiles and a clear order of preference. At the top of the list sits Aymeric Laporte, currently with Athletic Club, whose experience and familiarity with La Liga make him the most attractive option. Behind him, RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba offers a younger, more developmental route, while Real Betis defender Natan rounds out the trio as another domestic alternative.

The names are set. The clock is ticking. Barcelona now have to decide which path they trust to rebuild the heart of their defence.
