Barcelona's Urgent Search for Experienced Centre-Back After Araujo's Exit

Barcelona’s defensive plan for the season has been ripped up and thrown back on the table. Ronald Araujo is at Liverpool on loan, and Deco wants an experienced centre-back in before the window shuts. Urgently.

Inside the club, there is a clear verdict: the current options are not enough to carry Barcelona through the entire 2026/27 campaign. Not with Araujo gone and a squad already stretched by a long calendar.

According to AS, Deco is working flat out in the market, hunting for a left-footed centre-back who brings both experience and reliability. Not a prospect. Not a project. Someone who can walk into the dressing room and compete for a place from day one.

Depth chart exposed

Araujo’s departure has stripped away a layer of security in defence. Hansi Flick is now left with Pau Cubarsí, Eric Garcia, Gerard Martin and Andreas Christensen as his main central options. Four centre-backs for a season that will demand constant rotation.

On paper, Álvaro Cortés could help plug the gap. In reality, Barcelona are not convinced he is ready to shoulder the burden of being a regular first-team defender over a full season. He has shown flashes, but flashes are not enough when the bar is set at competing on all fronts.

There is another twist. Cortés does not want to drop back to Barça Atlètic and already has offers from other clubs. A move in the coming days is on the table, and if he goes, Barcelona’s already thin defensive line becomes even more fragile.

That is why Deco’s brief is so clear: find a centre-back who arrives ready-made, not another youngster who needs months of adaptation.

A very specific profile

Barcelona’s search is not about signing the biggest name available. The profile is narrow: a left-footed centre-back, experienced, and affordable within the club’s financial limits.

Luka Vuskovic was high on the list before his move to Brighton. Barcelona admired him, but at 19, he does not fit what Deco needs right now. The club cannot afford to lean on another teenager at the heart of defence.

The same logic applies to Jon Martin of Real Sociedad. The interest is real, the appreciation is there, but his age again counts against him for this particular role.

Even Cristian Romero, with his proven quality and experience, did not tick every box for Barcelona’s current needs. The club’s stance is clear: they are not chasing just any centre-back, or even simply the best one they can find.

They want a very specific piece for a very specific hole in the squad — and with the season already stretching out in front of them, Deco has little margin left to get it wrong.
