Barcelona's Striker Search Stalls as Gyokeres Links Cool

Barcelona have accelerated their summer rebuild in the space of a day, lining up two heavyweight arrivals – yet the most delicate piece of the puzzle, a new No. 9, remains stubbornly unsolved.

Joao Cancelo has agreed to terminate his contract with Al Hilal and is expected in Barcelona next week to complete a free transfer. At the same time, the Catalan club have reached an agreement with Manchester City for Rodri, a marquee midfield signing that reshapes the spine of Hansi Flick’s team before a ball has even been kicked.

Those two deals change the landscape. They also raise expectations. And now all eyes turn to the top of the pitch.

Gyokeres on the radar – but no move from Barça

With talks for Julian Alvarez going nowhere, Barça’s recruitment team have been forced to explore alternatives. Arsenal’s No. 9 Viktor Gyokeres has emerged as one of the names on their list, a physically imposing Swedish international who fits the profile of a traditional centre-forward.

But interest is not action.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have received no phone call, no email, no direct contact from Barcelona regarding Gyokeres. There have been no club-to-club talks, no opening proposal, not even a formal enquiry about the conditions of a possible deal.

Early suggestions of an active Barcelona push for the 28-year-old are ahead of reality. Deco has not yet sat down to negotiate or test Arsenal’s stance, and the numbers involved would be anything but simple.

Arsenal have little reason to make life easy. Gyokeres may not be first choice in Mikel Arteta’s plans, but he is still a valuable asset. Any move would likely be expensive, at a time when Barcelona are already juggling major financial commitments and working within tight limits.

A glaring hole at No. 9

The urgency is clear. Barcelona go into the final stretch of the window without an established senior centre-forward.

Robert Lewandowski has gone. Ferran Torres has followed him out. Flick, a coach who likes structure and reference points in attack, is left without a natural, proven No. 9 at the top level.

Right now, Hamza Abdelkarim is the most natural centre-forward in the squad. Flick can improvise by pushing Lamine Yamal, Anthony Gordon or Karim Adeyemi into central roles, but all three are more naturally wide or hybrid forwards than penalty-box specialists.

Julian Alvarez remains the striker Flick and Deco admire most. He is the preferred solution. Yet Atletico Madrid’s refusal to negotiate with Barcelona has turned that dream into one of the most complicated operations of the summer.

That is where Gyokeres re-enters the frame. If Barça decide in the coming days that they cannot unlock the Alvarez deal, the Swede could quickly move from “option” to “serious target”.

How one move could shake the market

For now, Barcelona have not made their play. But if they do, the impact could ripple across Europe.

Gyokeres endured a difficult first season in England and appears to sit behind Kai Havertz in Arteta’s pecking order. Arsenal, though, have their own ambitions in the market and have been linked with a move for Julian Alvarez themselves.

Atletico Madrid might be more open to selling Alvarez to Arsenal than to a direct Champions League rival in Barcelona. Such a scenario would reshape the forward market in an instant.

If Alvarez heads to north London, Atletico would need a replacement. One of the names on their radar is Victor Osimhen of Galatasaray, a powerful striker whose style aligns with Diego Simeone’s demands and the club’s tactical identity.

And that is where the chain reaction becomes clear. A firm move from Barça for Gyokeres could nudge Arsenal towards Alvarez, which could push Atletico towards Osimhen. One decision at Camp Nou, and the entire striker market starts to tilt.

Barcelona have already landed Cancelo and closed in on Rodri. The midfield and full-back pieces are falling into place. The question now is simple and pressing: who will finish their chances when the season starts?
