Barcelona’s search for a No. 9 has reached the impatient stage. Hansi Flick is not hiding it, not softening it and certainly not parking it for later. He wants a centre forward, he wants him now, and inside the club there is no debate about who sits at the top of that list: Julián Álvarez.

Lewandowski’s departure left a hole through the middle of Barça’s attack. Ferran Torres publicly questioning his future has only widened it. Flick has repeated the message in every internal meeting that matters: a pure striker is non‑negotiable for the project he wants to build for 2025-26.

Deco on the road, Atlético holding the line

That urgency sent Deco to Madrid in recent hours. This was not a courtesy visit. The Sporting Director travelled with a clear mission: unblock a deal that has been stuck for months, define a strategy with Álvarez’s camp and measure, once and for all, how real Barça’s chances are.

The problem is as simple as it is stubborn. Atlético refuse to negotiate.

Barcelona have been working on this move since last year. Deco and members of the board have kept a constant line open with the player’s entourage, laying the groundwork, reinforcing the message that Álvarez is not just an option but the option. Time keeps passing. The stance at the Metropolitano does not move.

Atlético have already turned down an offer of 100 million euros from Barça. Their response was blunt: pay the release clause, which is around 500 million, or forget it. For a club still operating under financial constraints, that figure is a wall, not a starting point.

Yet at Spotify Camp Nou, they refuse to read it as the end of the story.

Turning up the pressure

If there were any lingering doubts on the player’s side, the club want this visit to erase them.

Inside Barça’s offices, one belief keeps coming up: the key to this transfer may not sit in a boardroom, but in the dressing room at Atlético. Álvarez is due back on the 10th to start work under Diego Simeone. From Barcelona’s perspective, the pressure he can apply from within is fundamental.

Nor will Barça wait indefinitely. The German coach is pressing for clarity, and the sporting department knows that a summer cannot be wasted chasing a target that never becomes attainable. For now, though, Álvarez remains the main objective, and within the club they still describe the operation as feasible.

That is why this week carries so much weight in Barcelona’s planning. Deco’s meetings in Madrid, the conversations with the player’s agents, the first signals from Álvarez when he reports back to Simeone – all of it will shape the next move.

Either the path to Julián Álvarez finally starts to open, or Barça will have to accept that their ideal No. 9 may stay locked behind Atlético’s demands.

Flick is waiting. The project is on the table. Now the question is whether Barcelona can deliver the striker they have spent a year chasing, or whether the search for their next great centre forward is about to take a very different turn.
