Bayern Munich Cool Talk of Florian Wirtz Reunion

Bayern Munich have stepped away from talk of a dramatic Florian Wirtz reunion – for now.

The German champions have been repeatedly linked with the Liverpool playmaker after his difficult start to life in England, but well-sourced reporting in Germany has cooled the noise around an immediate move.

Bayern shut down ‘shock Wirtz move’

Liverpool beat Bayern Munich and Manchester City to Wirtz in the summer of 2025, paying around £116m to prise him from Bayer Leverkusen. It was a statement signing: one of Europe’s most creative young attackers, dropped straight into the glare of Anfield.

The adaptation has been rough. Wirtz has struggled with the physical demands of the Premier League and has not yet hit the heights that made him such a coveted talent in the Bundesliga. That dip opened the door to speculation that Bayern were circling again, ready to strike if Liverpool’s faith began to waver.

Christian Falk has pushed back hard on that idea.

“It is NOT TRUE: Bayern Munich are tracking Florian Wirtz and could make a shock move for the Liverpool player. My information is that this is not true,” the German reporter told CF Bayern Insider.

The links are easy to understand. Bayern and Wirtz have history.

“Of course, there is a big history between FC Bayern and Wirtz. There were two secret meetings before he decided on Liverpool: the first one in Munich and then in Liverpool as well. At the time, Arne Slot persuaded the German international to switch to Merseyside,” Falk revealed.

That backstory guarantees rumours, especially when questions are asked about Wirtz’s form in England. Falk, though, pushed back on the criticism.

“To be clear, I don’t necessarily share those concerns; I think Wirtz is performing better than he did last year. He has a new position in the team,” he said.

The Wirtz narrative at Bayern also overlaps with another key name: Jamal Musiala. The Germany star has not been at full throttle after illness and last season’s injury issues, which only fuels debate about how Bayern might reshape their attacking midfield in the long term.

Swap whispers: Wirtz and Olise in the frame

For now, Falk is adamant there is “nothing planned” between Bayern and Wirtz. That does not mean the story is dead.

The idea of a swap deal involving Michael Olise has already surfaced – and hasn’t been completely dismissed.

Reports have tried to stitch together Wirtz’s situation, Musiala’s form and Olise’s future into one grand equation. Falk understands why.

“So, you can see where some reports have taken these conditions and claimed that one plus one equals two. Of course, if Florian Wirtz were, at some point in future, interested in making a return to the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich would be the first team he’d talk to. However, there is nothing planned,” he said.

Bayern, he stressed, are not short of options. They have a deep squad, Musiala tied to a long contract and a coach in Vincent Kompany who is reshaping the attack with Olise at the heart of it.

Kompany has started using Olise centrally, as a fulcrum, mirroring the role he plays for France. That tweak only strengthens the Frenchman’s importance in Munich’s plans and complicates any talk of him being used as a makeweight.

“So, FC Bayern have a lot of options. Don’t forget, either, that it was a lot of money Liverpool paid for Wirtz,” Falk reminded.

That price tag matters. Any serious move for Wirtz would demand either a major sale or a significant player heading the other way.

Which is where Olise comes back in.

“Everyone is hoping the former Crystal Palace star signs a new contract, but if not, and he decides for a transfer, of course Florian Wirtz would be a player who’s interesting for Bayern Munich,” Falk admitted.

The fit is obvious. “The German can play on the side or centrally. This would be a very interesting thing,” he added, outlining a scenario in which Bayern either strike a swap with Liverpool or cash in on Olise, perhaps to Real Madrid, and then use that money to launch a Wirtz bid.

Nothing is close. Nothing is agreed. Yet the thought has clearly crossed minds in Munich.

“So, there are many, many positions which have to be discussed. I wouldn’t say it’s not true that Bayern Munich would have thought of that.”

For Liverpool, that leaves a clear challenge: turn Wirtz into the player they paid £116m for, or risk watching Bayern come back to the table when the conditions finally line up.
