The German champions have reportedly set their sights on Brentford striker Thiago as the ideal understudy to Kane, with Italian journalist Nicolo Schira claiming Bayern have already opened preliminary talks over a move.

It is not a luxury hunt. It is a necessity.

Nicolas Jackson has gone back to Chelsea after his loan in Munich, leaving Vincent Kompany without a natural centre-forward to rotate with his captain. Kane is still the unquestioned spearhead of the attack, but the lack of a specialist backup has pushed Bayern to rethink a summer plan that had supposedly been wrapped up weeks ago.

Thiago’s name did not appear from nowhere. The Brazilian was one of the deadliest finishers in the Premier League last season. He played all 38 league games for Brentford, scoring 22 goals and adding one assist, finishing as the division’s second-highest scorer behind only Erling Haaland.

Those numbers have a price. And Brentford know it.

A difficult deal at the Gtech

Prising Thiago away from the Gtech Community Stadium will be anything but straightforward for Bayern. The 23-year-old’s contract with the Bees runs until June 2031, and reports indicate there is no release clause written into the deal.

That hands the Premier League club a strong bargaining position. Any transfer would likely demand a significant fee and a convincing sporting project to tempt Brentford into parting with their main goal threat.

For Bayern, the calculation is clear: pay big for a proven scorer now, or gamble on patchwork solutions behind a 33-year-old Kane in a season where margins at the top are razor thin.

Kane’s hunt for the one missing trophy

Kane’s own situation only sharpens that dilemma. The England captain has been in devastating form since arriving in Germany and is expected to hold talks with the club over an extension to his current contract.

His motivation is simple – and public. He wants the Champions League. He believes this Bayern squad can deliver it.

Last season, Kane produced an extraordinary return: 61 goals in 51 games across all competitions. His overall record in Bavaria now stands at 146 goals in 147 appearances, a staggering strike rate even by Bayern’s standards.

But those numbers also underline the risk. Bayern lean heavily on him. Finding a reliable deputy is no longer a side issue; it cuts to the core of how they manage his minutes in a campaign that will again demand deep runs on multiple fronts.

From “business done” to one more move?

Not long ago, Bayern’s hierarchy sounded content to stand pat. Sporting director Max Eberl had publicly suggested their summer business was “done”, satisfied that the squad was balanced enough to compete without another major signing.

They had already addressed key areas: Nathaniel Brown arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt to strengthen the full-back options, while Ismael Saibari joined from PSV Eindhoven to inject more creativity on the flanks. At Sabener Strasse, the feeling was that the puzzle looked complete.

Thiago’s emergence as a target shows how quickly that picture can change when one piece – a specialist centre-forward behind Kane – is missing.

Kompany’s internal options

If Bayern fail to land Thiago or any other striker, Kompany is not entirely empty-handed.

Serge Gnabry has often been used through the middle and offers a more mobile, fluid take on the No.9 role. He can stretch defences, drift wide, and combine with wingers and attacking midfielders in a way that shifts the shape of Bayern’s front line.

But that is a tactical workaround, not a like-for-like replacement. When the Champions League knockout rounds arrive, when Kane needs a breather or carries a knock, will that be enough?

Bayern’s pursuit of Thiago is really a question about how serious they are about protecting their biggest asset – and how far they are willing to go to make sure Kane is still fresh when the season’s biggest nights come around.
