Ben White Injury Disrupts Arsenal's Double Bid
Arsenal’s push for a historic Premier League and Champions League double has taken a brutal hit. Ben White is out for the rest of the season.
The defender left the London Stadium on Sunday with a brace strapped to his right knee, forced off in the first half of Arsenal’s tense 1-0 win over West Ham. The victory kept Mikel Arteta’s side on track in two competitions. The cost is only now becoming clear.
Arsenal have confirmed that White has suffered a “significant medial knee ligament injury” and will miss the final two league fixtures and the Champions League final against Paris St Germain on May 30.
Arteta did not hide his concern straight after the match, admitting the injury “didn’t look good at all”. The scans have backed up that instinct.
In a statement, the club said: “Further to Sunday’s match at West Ham, subsequent assessments and specialist reviews have confirmed that Ben White has sustained a significant medial knee ligament injury, which will rule him out for the remainder of this season.
“Our medical team are now managing Ben’s recovery and rehabilitation programme, with everyone fully focused on supporting the aim of Ben being ready for the start of our pre-season preparations.”
For Arsenal, it is a tactical problem. For White, it cuts deeper.
The 28-year-old had just fought his way back into the England picture, ending a four-year international absence with recent appearances in friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. This setback is expected to end his World Cup chances before Gareth Southgate names his squad, ripping away a tournament that had suddenly come back into view.
On the club front, the timing could hardly be worse. White has been a mainstay at right-back under Arteta, a key cog in the build-up play and one of the side’s most reliable performers in both boxes. Removing him from the equation on the eve of the run-in leaves a hole that can’t be neatly patched over.
Next Steps for Arsenal
Arteta must now improvise for three defining games: league fixtures against Burnley and Crystal Palace, then the showdown with PSG. Jurrien Timber, who might have been the obvious replacement, is also sidelined with a groin problem and has already missed two months. There is no clear indication he will return in time to influence the season’s climax.
The pressure shifts to the supporting cast. Cristhian Mosquera is expected to step in at right-back, a sizeable responsibility with titles and European glory on the line. Declan Rice has already been used as an emergency option in that role this season and could be asked to shuffle again if Arteta needs a different balance or extra control in midfield zones.
White’s injury does not just strip Arsenal of a defender. It removes a rhythm, a passing angle, a familiar outlet under pressure. On nights like the one looming against PSG, those details matter.
Arsenal will talk about collective strength and opportunity for others. They have to. But as the season tightens and margins shrink, the absence of one of their most dependable players hangs over the run-in like a question they cannot fully answer until the final whistle in May.
