Bournemouth's Europa League Challenge: AC Milan and Real Sociedad Await

Bournemouth now know the scale of the task – and the opportunity – that awaits them in their first Europa League league phase campaign.

Marco Rose’s side have been handed a compelling eight-game schedule, headlined by a home clash with European giants AC Milan and a trip to Spain to face Real Sociedad. The Cherries will also meet Viktoria Plzen, Sparta Prague, Sturm Graz, Celta Vigo, Hapoel Beer Sheva and Lillestrom in the new 36-team format.

How the draw works

UEFA seeded the 36 clubs into four pots based on their performances in European competition over the last five seasons. Pot one contained the highest-ranked sides, pot four the lowest.

From there, each team was drawn to face two opponents from each pot, with two key restrictions: no more than two opponents from the same country, and no meetings with clubs from their own domestic league during this phase.

Bournemouth’s eight opponents are:

• Real Sociedad (away)
• Viktoria Plzen (home)
• Sparta Prague (away)
• Sturm Graz (home)
• Celta Vigo (away)
• Hapoel Beer Sheva (home)
• Lillestrom (away)

The exact order of those fixtures will be confirmed by UEFA in due course, but the calendar is already mapped out – and it is demanding.

The league phase stretches from mid-September into late January, with Bournemouth facing eight games that will shape their European season:

From there, the competition sharpens into knockout football:

• Final: 26 May 2027, Frankfurt
