Brad Friedel Returns to Football in Boardroom Role

Brad Friedel is set for a return to English football – but this time in the boardroom, not between the posts.

The former USA international goalkeeper has emerged as a key figure in an American consortium, led by Miami-based businessman Scott Davidson, that is closing in on a takeover of League Two side Shrewsbury Town.

Davidson cleared, Wycherley era nearing its end

BBC Shropshire report that Davidson, 58, has already passed the English Football League’s owners’ and directors’ test and been approved by both the EFL and the Independent Football Regulator to proceed.

Talks between Davidson’s group and the club’s current hierarchy are ongoing, with the deal expected to be completed in the coming weeks. If it goes through, it will bring down the curtain on the long reign of 85-year-old chairman Roland Wycherley, who has been at the helm for around three decades.

The agreement on the table would see both Davidson and Friedel take seats on the Shrewsbury Town board, ushering in a distinctly American flavour at a club fighting to re-establish itself in the lower reaches of the English pyramid.

From Wall Street to the football ladder

Davidson may not carry Friedel’s name recognition among British fans, but his CV is hardly short of weight.

A self-made multi-millionaire from the commercial real estate world, he studied at the Yale School of Management before spending 12 years as a managing director at New York banking giant JPMorganChase. As his business career accelerated, so did his attachment to football.

That passion has already left a mark in Scotland. Since July 2021, Davidson has been a director and majority shareholder at The Spartans, the ambitious Edinburgh club climbing rapidly through the ranks. Under his watch, Spartans have surged from the Lowland League to the brink of SPFL League One, their ascent widely viewed as one of Scottish football’s standout success stories of recent seasons.

Davidson has also been heavily involved in developing Spartans’ football foundation, now regarded as one of the largest of its kind in the UK, bolstering the club’s community and development work around the capital.

Friedel’s backing and a UEFA ‘A’ twist

Friedel has been deeply involved behind the scenes throughout the Shrewsbury talks, playing what has been described as a key supportive role in the takeover process. The former Blackburn, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Tottenham goalkeeper has spoken in glowing terms about Davidson, calling him one of the most talented and humble people he has ever met.

Davidson brings an unusual extra to the boardroom table: a UEFA ‘A’ coaching licence. He did not pursue it to stand in the technical area every weekend, but to better understand what a manager needs and how a football operation truly functions from the inside.

It is that blend – Wall Street nous, hands-on experience at Spartans, a deepening football education and the presence of a figure as seasoned as Friedel – that Davidson hopes to unleash at Shrewsbury Town.

If the deal gets over the line, the next chapter at the club will be written not just in the accounts and board minutes, but on the pitch. The question now is how quickly this new American-led regime can turn preparation into progress in League Two.
