Bradford City Sign Hayden Matthews on Loan: A Defensive Boost
Bradford City have added defensive steel to their ranks with the season-long loan signing of Portsmouth centre-back Hayden Matthews.
The 22-year-old, capped once by Australia, heads to Mbanq Valley Parade looking to relaunch his career after a stop-start spell at Fratton Park. Portsmouth paid £1.25m to bring him in from Sydney FC in January 2025, a move that underlined his reputation as a long-term prospect rather than a short-term gamble.
Since then, though, injuries have repeatedly stalled his progress. Matthews has managed 20 appearances for Pompey, his last competitive outing coming in the 1-1 draw with Birmingham at Fratton Park on the final day of last season.
Bradford are betting that a full campaign of regular football can unlock the defender they believed they were getting at the peak of that transfer battle. Strong, mobile, and with international experience already on his CV, Matthews arrives with something to prove and a point to make.
He becomes the club’s third recent loan addition, joining QPR midfielder Kieran Morgan and Blackburn Rovers defender George Pratt in a reshaped squad. Bradford’s recruitment drive now has a clear theme: youth, energy and players desperate for minutes.
The question is simple. Can Matthews turn promise into presence at the heart of Bradford’s back line over the course of this season-long stay?
