Brentford's Fantasy Premier League Insights for 2026/27

Brentford’s flying start to the 2026/27 campaign has come with a twist for Fantasy Premier League managers – the club has linked up with Fantasy Football Scout to serve up data-driven advice all season.

Scout will be digging into the numbers and feeding out gameweek tips, differentials and strategy pieces aimed at keeping FPL bosses ahead of their mini-league rivals. The first batch of evidence could hardly be clearer: Brentford assets mean business.

Best of the Bees

Keith Andrews’ side tore into Tottenham Hotspur, three goals to the good by the 50th minute and barely easing off.

At the heart of it all, the new name on everyone’s FPL radar: Mamadou Sangaré (£5.5m). Flagged last week for his potential to rack up defensive contributions (DefCon) points, he delivered exactly that on debut – and then went a step further with two assists.

The first was slick. A sharp one-two with Dango Ouattara (£6.5m), a burst, a cutback, and Keane Lewis-Potter (£5.5m) swept in the opener.

Then came the chaos in the box. Mathias Jensen’s (£5.5m) effort was pushed out, and Vitaly Janelt (£5.0m) reacted quickest to ram home the rebound for 2-0. Janelt joined Sangaré and Kristoffer Ajer (£4.5m) in hitting the DefCon threshold, underlining how aggressive Brentford’s defensive unit was in both directions.

Early in the second half, the pressure told again. Antonín Kinský (£4.5m) could only parry Sangaré’s drive, and Michael Kayode (£4.5m) was on the spot to finish from close range.

Even Igor Thiago’s (£8.0m) rare miss from the spot – off the post, to the groans of 1.5 million FPL managers – barely registered in the context of the contest. It hurt fantasy ranks, not the result.

Kayode in the spotlight

Sangaré walked away with 14 points. Kayode finished just one short.

While Ajer and Nathan Collins (£5.5m) both had chances to add goals to their clean sheets, Kayode repeatedly arrived in the right zones, at the right time. His numbers backed up the eye test.

Brentford’s dominance was brutal. They racked up 13 attempts from set pieces alone – more shots than half of the Premier League’s teams managed in total in Gameweek 1. Inside the penalty area, the shot count read 20-4 in the Bees’ favour. Four of those fell to Kayode.

This is not a one-off profile, either. Last season, Kayode led all defenders for take-ons (107) and successful long throws into the box (38). He is a defender in the game, but his role and output look anything but conservative.

For managers chasing upside from the back, he has forced his way into the conversation immediately.

Best of the rest

The weekend’s biggest FPL hauls came from Brighton. Maxim De Cuyper (£4.5m) and Jack Hinshelwood (£6.0m) exploded for 17 and 16 points respectively, as the Seagulls ripped through Aston Villa and went 4-0 up by half-time. Listed as a defender, De Cuyper spent the afternoon starring high on the left wing – the kind of reclassification gold FPL managers dream about.

Elsewhere, the shock came from the play-off winners. Hull City stormed into a two-goal lead over Manchester United at home, with centre-backs Semi Ajayi (£4.0m) and Nobel Mendy (£4.0m) providing the finishes.

The Tigers held that 2-0 scoreline. The fallout for fantasy was immediate. Highly owned Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) both blanked, as did Manchester City duo Erling Haaland (£15.5m) and Antoine Semenyo (£8.5m).

Instead, it was Marc Guéhi (£6.0m) and Joško Gvardiol (£5.5m) who salvaged City against Bournemouth, turning a poor FPL outing for many into something just about manageable.

On the rise

Some of Gameweek 2’s most in-demand names did not even need big goal tallies to catch the eye.

Riccardo Calafiori (£5.5m) didn’t score, but he supplied the first goal of the entire 2026/27 campaign on Friday night. That early assist has pushed him into the bracket of most-bought players ahead of Friday’s 6.30pm BST deadline.

Arsenal’s second of the evening came from a familiar source of creativity. Christos Tzolis (£6.5m), fresh off seven pre-season assists and 23 in his final season at Club Brugge, teed it up. Martin Ødegaard (£6.5m) then made it 3-0, reinforcing his status as a mid-priced playmaker who can match premiums on the right day.

On Monday, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer (£9.5m) and João Pedro (£7.5m) both delivered double-digit returns, reasserting themselves as central figures in the early-season template.

Sangaré and De Cuyper have now joined that group on countless watchlists. One gameweek in, and the defensive positions are already being ripped up and rewritten.

The armband question

Despite the weekend’s frustration, the captaincy picture may not change much.

Most Gameweek 2 armbands are still likely to land on either Haaland or Fernandes, last season’s top two FPL scorers. Haaland failed to score on a City opening day for the first time, but Crystal Palace arrive amid a difficult summer and remain a fixture managers will happily attack.

Fernandes, even in defeat at Hull, still carved out three chances and created three more. The underlying numbers stayed strong. Now he gets a home fixture against another promoted side, Ipswich Town.

The template has taken an early hit. The question for managers is simple: stick with the proven heavyweights, or ride the Brentford wave and the new defensive stars while they are still underpriced?
