Brentford Verbal Agreement to Sign El Hadji Malick Diouf for £40m

Brentford have struck a verbal agreement with West Ham to sign El Hadji Malick Diouf in a deal that could rise to £40m, as Keith Andrews moves decisively to reinforce his defence after last season’s near miss with Europe.

The 21-year-old Senegal international is set to cost an initial £35m, with a further £5m tied to performance-related add-ons. West Ham have accepted Brentford’s offer and Diouf has been given the green light to undergo a medical.

It marks a rapid shift in a transfer story that had gone quiet. Diouf has been Brentford’s top defensive target all window, but talks had stalled earlier in the summer before being revived this week and pushed quickly towards agreement.

West Ham’s stance told its own story. Diouf started their Championship opener against Burnley, then vanished from the last two matchday squads as negotiations advanced. The Hammers, rebuilding after relegation, are now set to bank a hefty profit on a player they signed for £19m from Slavia Prague just a year ago.

He leaves with solid numbers behind him. Diouf made 34 appearances for West Ham last season, supplying five assists from left-back in a struggling side that ultimately finished 18th and dropped out of the Premier League.

Now he is poised to step straight back into the top flight, this time with a club on the rise. Brentford, ninth last season and denied European football only on goal difference, have moved aggressively in this window to turn promise into something more concrete.

Diouf is in line to become their fifth signing of the summer. He follows striker Callum Wilson, midfielder Mamadou Sangare, centre-back Jannik Schuster and winger Jaidon Anthony into an increasingly ambitious squad.

His pedigree extends beyond club football. After breaking into the Senegal national team last year, Diouf featured four times at the World Cup this summer, adding tournament experience to his growing résumé.

If the medical goes as expected, Brentford will have landed a dynamic, attack-minded left-back entering his prime years, while West Ham will have cashed in at the right time. One club banking on a reset in the Championship, the other betting big that this is the final piece that turns a near-miss into a European season.
