Guimaraes is understood to have informed Newcastle in July that he wanted to join Arsenal. That intention has shaped the summer at St James’ Park, where the hierarchy had already begun to contemplate a future without their influential midfield leader and had drawn up a list of potential successors, including Inter Milan and Croatia midfielder Petar Sucic.

Now the next key conversation will not be with Arsenal’s medical staff but with Matthias Jaissle.

The new head coach is already with the squad in Spain, even though his official confirmation as Eddie Howe’s successor remains delayed by paperwork.
