Carlos Alcaraz Calls for Change After Laver Cup Court Conditions

Players Critique Court Speed and Ball Performance

After the triumph, both Mensik and Alcaraz addressed questions about the playing conditions at the O2 Arena, which hosted this indoor hard-court tournament. Despite no ranking points being awarded, matches still affected head-to-head records.

Mensik described the courts as "one of the slowest surfaces" he's encountered all year, adding that the ball quality made it even tougher to finish points, especially given his style that relies on strong serves and heavy groundstrokes.

"It was really tough for me to get used to it, to get the rhythm," Mensik said. "The combination of the balls, which I consider not that good, made it super slow."

Alcaraz shared a different view, saying slow courts don't bother him much because his serve isn't the biggest weapon. He noted conversations with Yannick Noah about how tennis courts used to play faster years ago but now seem slower.

"It's not about the courts, it's about the balls," Alcaraz explained. "The ball's reaction on the court changes a lot during tournaments. New balls play very differently, and you only get two or three games with those before you have to adapt."

He urged tennis officials to focus on selecting balls that best suit the court surfaces and tournaments. While uncertain if changes will happen, he emphasized his efforts to adapt quickly across various events.

Next Stop: Japan Open Title Defense

Alcaraz is one among many top players expressing concerns about ball speed and court conditions. Despite the challenges, he has shown the ability to adjust swiftly amid a packed ATP schedule.

The Spaniard now heads to Tokyo for the Japan Open, where he returns as the defending champion. Though he enjoys the Laver Cup atmosphere, his focus shifts to more competitive matches in Japan.
