Shubman Gill's Captaincy Record Across All Formats: Tests, ODIs, T20Is, and IPL

Shubman Gill has quickly become a prominent figure in Indian cricket leadership. Since taking over as Test captain in 2025, he has overseen several memorable wins including India's comeback series in England and victories against West Indies, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka.

India's 165-run win in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle boosted his Test captaincy record to six wins in ten matches. Yet, the second match ended in a draw after Sri Lanka fought hard on the final day, lowering his winning percentage slightly. At just 26 years old, Gill has led India in Tests, ODIs, T20Is, and also commands the Gujarat Titans in the IPL since 2024, steering them into playoffs twice consecutively.

His ODI captaincy began in October 2025 against Australia with a tough series loss of 2-1. He finally recorded an ODI series win in June 2026 by beating Afghanistan 3-0 at home. In the July 2026 England series, India won the opener but lost the next two matches, dropping the series.

Appointed before the 2025 England tour following Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s retirement from Tests, Gill's initial major challenge was a drawn five-Test series against England (2-2). He then secured India's first Test series win as captain versus West Indies at home and led India to their first overseas Test series victory against Afghanistan in June 2026. The Galle Test win over Sri Lanka saw India posting 462 runs, bowling out Sri Lanka for 284, and setting a target of 372. Sri Lanka fell short at 206, sealing a 165-run win for India. This marked Gill's sixth Test win in ten matches, raising his winning ratio to 60%. However, the drawn Colombo Test lowered it slightly afterwards.
