Why Cristiano Ronaldo Is Missing Portugal’s Match Against Norway

Jorge Jesus has started strong as Portugal’s manager, winning his first three matches. His debut saw a narrow win over Wales, followed by victories against Norway and Denmark on the road. This puts Portugal at the top of their UEFA Nations League group with a perfect record.

Despite the positive results, trouble has emerged around the team’s biggest star, Cristiano Ronaldo. At 41, Ronaldo will miss the upcoming home match versus Norway, sparking plenty of speculation.

What Led to Ronaldo Sitting Out?

Ronaldo’s absence traces back to tensions during the previous international fixtures. After a poor performance against Wales that ended with him being substituted early, Ronaldo was benched for the next game in Norway. Although he was promised playing time by Jesus, he remained an unused substitute during the 2–1 win.

With Portugal clinging to a slim lead late in the game, Jesus decided not to risk bringing Ronaldo on. Speaking afterward, Jesus stated, “I can promise whatever I want, I’m the coach. No player will ever make a decision for me.”

The reaction from Ronaldo was predictable. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was furious at being sidelined and Jesus’s comments. He chose to leave the national team camp immediately, ruling himself out of the recent 4–2 victory over Denmark and the next fixture against Norway.

Jesus didn’t hold back discussing the situation publicly. Ronaldo confirmed his departure on social media: “After the press conference of the National Team coach, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the National Team camp. In due time, I will tell all the Portuguese about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, which I always dedicated myself to. Now it’s time to wish good luck to Portugal and all my teammates, without exception.”

The Fallout Among Fans and Officials

Ronaldo’s exit has dominated headlines, especially ahead of the clash with a Norway side led by Erling Haaland. Questions now swirl around Ronaldo’s future with Portugal.

Supporters have rallied behind the striker. Billboards appeared across Lisbon and nearby areas bearing messages such as: “Thank you Cristiano Ronaldo for everything you’ve done for Portugal. You will always be our captain. Portugal is always with you.”

Criticism also targeted Jorge Jesus, accusing him of mistreating Ronaldo and having an inflated ego. The Portuguese Football Federation continues to deal with the fallout as this saga develops.
