Calvin Ramsay Joins St Mirren on Loan to Rebuild Career

Calvin Ramsay has drawn a line under his Liverpool career and come home to try to rebuild it.

The 23-year-old right-back has joined St Mirren on loan for the 2026/27 season, subject to international clearance, in a move that effectively ends his time at Anfield. His Liverpool contract expires next summer and the club have already decided he will not be offered a new deal, meaning he will leave on a free.

For Ramsay, that clarity has brought a different kind of urgency. With his long-term future up in the air, he wanted something that felt familiar.

"I feel really good, really excited," he told the St Mirren media team. "I've been in and trained and met all the boys, so yeah, I'm looking forward to it.

"I know the league and I wanted to come back up here and try and show what I can do and rebuild myself again. I feel like it's a good place to come. I want to try and perform, work as hard as I can and see where that takes me."

The pull of Scotland was about more than comfort. Ramsay remembers exactly what it is like to come to Paisley as the opposition.

"It's a really tough place to come for opposition teams and I think the pitch is really good as well from when I played here," he said. "It's a good set up, it's a good club and I'm just excited to get going."

That excitement has been hard earned. Ramsay arrived at Liverpool from Aberdeen in June 2022 for an initial £4.2m fee, billed as one of the brightest young full-backs in the country. Injuries hit almost immediately. Rhythm never came. The promise never had the platform.

Across four years on Liverpool’s books, he managed only four first-team appearances. Loan spells were supposed to provide answers. Instead, they brought more frustration. Between Preston North End, Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic and Kilmarnock across the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons, he played just 26 times in total.

He stayed on Merseyside for the 2025/26 campaign under Arne Slot and was at least close enough to feel the matchday buzz again, named in the squad 20 times. But that, too, came with a caveat. A defensive injury crisis opened the door; he walked through it only twice.

Now comes a cleaner slate.

Ramsay has already spoken with the St Mirren manager and liked what he heard.

"I spoke to the manager a couple of times before I came up and he got his plan across and what he wanted to do," he said. "It's probably a different St Mirren compared to the last few years. That'll suit me. I'm comfortable on the ball, I'm composed, I like to get on it and try and create things and make things happen."

St Mirren get a Scotland international with a point to prove. Ramsay gets a stage he trusts, in a league he knows, with the chance to finally string games together and show why Liverpool paid big money for him in the first place.

From January, he will be free to talk to other clubs about his next permanent move.
