Calvin Ramsay's Chance to Rebuild at St Mirren

Calvin Ramsay has called his move to St Mirren a chance to “rebuild myself” as the Liverpool right-back looks to relaunch a stalled career in Paisley.

The 23-year-old has joined the Buddies on a season-long loan from Anfield, seeking something he has barely tasted since leaving Aberdeen for £4.1m four years ago – a regular run of games.

Four first-team appearances for Liverpool tell the story. The promise that persuaded Jürgen Klopp’s side to move early for the Scotland youth standout has been interrupted by injuries and stop-start loans. Spells at Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Kilmarnock brought just 26 senior outings. Enough to stay in the conversation. Nowhere near enough to build momentum.

Ramsay believes St Mirren is the right place to change that.

“I know the league and I wanted to come back up here and try and show what I can do and rebuild myself again,” he said, outlining a move that feels as much about mentality as minutes. “I feel like it’s a good place to come. I want to try and perform, work as hard as I can and see where that takes me.”

This is not the same St Mirren he watched from afar. A club that has grown in stature in recent seasons, with a more ambitious approach on the ball, now offers him a platform that fits his strengths.

“It's probably a different St Mirren compared to the last few years. That'll suit me,” Ramsay added. “I'm comfortable on the ball, I'm composed, I like to get on it and try and create things and make things happen.”

For manager Craig McLeish, the deal feels like a perfect alignment: a hungry player in need of rhythm, and a squad looking for a new edge down the right.

He described Ramsay as “exceptional” and believes the full-back brings a “different dynamic” to his group, pointing to the mix of technical quality and top-level schooling that comes with a Liverpool defender and a Scotland international, however early that cap arrived.

“It's a really important year for Calvin where he needs to find regular football to help kick on his career and we're happy to give him that platform because we get an exceptional young player to add to our group,” McLeish said.

Ramsay’s lone Scotland appearance came in 2022. At 23, that line on his CV can still be the start of something, not a footnote. What happens at St Mirren over the next nine months will go a long way to deciding which way it leans.
