Michael Carrick on Rashford and Zirkzee Transfer Strategies

Michael Carrick is just about the last man you’d expect to open up on transfer strategy. Quiet, controlled, relentlessly private, the Manchester United head coach has never been one for headline soundbites.

He won’t get much choice this week.

With Joshua Zirkzee and Marcus Rashford both back on the agenda, Carrick will walk into his latest press conference knowing the questions are coming.

Rashford likely to stay – and to start

Rashford’s situation has rumbled in the background all summer, with fresh reports now linking him to Fenerbahce. Inside the club, though, the message has barely shifted.

For the past month, the consistent line from all sides has been clear: Rashford is expected to stay at United this season. That remains the case.

His performance at Hull City last week helped that stance, not harmed it. Introduced at half-time in the defeat, Rashford was one of United’s brighter players, injecting urgency and threat into a flat display. On that evidence, there is a genuine chance he is promoted to the starting XI when Ipswich visit Old Trafford on Sunday.

So the Rashford story, for now, is less about an exit and more about whether he can re-establish himself as a central figure in Carrick’s plans.

Zirkzee interest grows – but United want a sale

Zirkzee’s situation feels very different.

The Netherlands forward has drawn sustained interest from Serie A, with Fiorentina the latest to make a move. Their approach centres on a loan deal, a relatively low-risk way of bringing him in and testing him in Italy.

United see it another way.

From Old Trafford’s perspective, the preference is clear: a permanent sale, or at the very least a loan with an obligation to buy. A straight loan does little for United’s longer-term planning or their balance sheet, especially when other Italian clubs have already registered interest during the summer.

That is where the intrigue lies. Fiorentina have stepped forward, but will one of those other Serie A sides now firm up their admiration with a concrete bid that matches United’s terms?

Carrick will be asked about all of this, of course. He will almost certainly give little away. The decisions, though, are edging closer – on Rashford’s role, on Zirkzee’s future, and on how United shape their squad as the season bears down.
