Celtic's Defensive Plans Impacted by Alistair Johnston Injury
Celtic face being without Alistair Johnston until November in a blow that cuts right into the heart of Martin O’Neill’s defensive plans.
The Canadian right-back pulled up with a hamstring issue and was withdrawn at half-time during Celtic’s emphatic 5-0 win over Kilmarnock in the second league game of the season. At the time, the problem was played down, with Assistant Manager Shaun Maloney suggesting it was nothing more than a minor concern after the match at Rugby Park.
That optimism has vanished.
Earlier this week it emerged that Celtic do not expect Johnston back in action until November, with the damage worse than first indicated. Now, according to Sun Sport, scan results have confirmed the club’s fears, with Johnston set for a “considerable” spell on the sidelines.
For O’Neill, it changes the transfer window.
Right-back reshuffle
The manager must now decide whether to move decisively for a new right-back or lean heavily on youth. Celtic are already in talks to sign Niko Sigur from Hajduk Split, a player who can operate both at right-back and in defensive midfield. Those are precisely the two areas where the squad needs cover.
Sigur’s versatility makes him an attractive solution: one signing, two problem positions eased.
At the same time, Colby Donovan has thrown himself into the conversation. The 19-year-old delivered a strong performance against LASK, seizing his chance to stake a claim for Johnston’s shirt. O’Neill’s decision to start Donovan ahead of Tony Ralston was a clear statement, and the expectation now is that the youngster will continue in the role while Celtic work on bringing in reinforcements.
Donovan has earned that trust. But he cannot carry the load alone.
Market moves on the table
Celtic have also been linked with Yuki Sugawara of Southampton, who is reportedly set to be made available. The Japanese defender would offer a more specialist option at right-back, in contrast to the multi-role profile of Sigur.
The memory of last season’s struggles at right-back when Johnston was previously injured still lingers. Celtic lacked depth then. They cannot afford a repeat.
Donovan’s emergence is a welcome surprise, yet the demands of a long campaign – domestic and European – will test every department of the squad. That is why Sigur, with his ability to slot into both defence and midfield, looks like the most practical and strategic move.
The question now is not whether Celtic act, but how boldly they do it before the window closes.
