Mourinho’s Return to Madrid Under Injury Crisis

Real Madrid start their new La Liga season on Saturday night with a familiar face back on the touchline and a long list of problems on the team sheet.

Jose Mourinho returns to official duty with Los Blancos away to Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium, a setting that suddenly feels far less comfortable given the state of his squad and the mood of the hosts.

Espanyol arrive buoyant. They dismantled Levante 3-0 on the opening weekend, a statement win that has lifted confidence and sharpened belief that they can bloody a giant’s nose early in the campaign.

Espanyol Confident, But Not Unscathed

The home side are not at full strength either. Cabrera is suspended, while Javi Puado and Kike Garcia miss out through injury. Those are important absences, but not enough to dim the optimism around the RCDE after that emphatic opening victory.

They sense an opportunity. Madrid are wounded. And everyone in the stadium will know it.

Madrid’s Injury Crisis Forces Mourinho’s Hand

Mourinho’s problems run far deeper than a single suspension and a couple of knocks.

Real Madrid travel without a string of first-team names: Ferland Mendy, Marco Asensio, Eder Militao, Aurelien Tchouameni, Thiago Pitarch, Rodrygo and Endrick are all sidelined with physical issues. It is a brutal list for the very first league outing of the season.

The situation has forced Mourinho to dip into the academy. Mario Rivas, Cestero and Alexis Ceria have been promoted to the senior squad for the trip, a clear sign of how stretched Madrid are before the campaign has even settled into rhythm.

Star-Studded XI Still Expected

Even with so many absentees, the projected starting XI underlines why Madrid remain title favourites.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Real Madrid are expected to line up with:

Courtois; Arnold, Konate, Huijsen, Carreras; Valverde, Bernardo Silva, Brahim Diaz; Arda Guler, Vinicius, Kylian Mbappe.

On paper, it is a side built to dominate the ball and tear teams apart in transition. In reality, it is also a side that will be asked to click immediately, under pressure, in Mourinho’s first competitive game back in charge.

Title Revenge vs. Early Statement

The stakes are clear.

Madrid want their La Liga crown back after watching Barcelona lift the trophy in each of the last two seasons. That stings. This campaign is about reclaiming domestic authority as much as it is about any European ambition.

Espanyol have a different target. They want to turn a fast start into something more meaningful, to prove that the 3-0 over Levante was not a one-off, and to take points off a heavyweight already feeling the strain.

Mourinho walks back into the Spanish spotlight with injuries piling up, academy kids on the bench and a fanbase demanding the title. Espanyol smell vulnerability.

For a season that Madrid insist must end with the trophy back in their hands, how much can they afford to drop on the very first night?
