Mykhailo Mudryk's Loan Negotiation with Leeds United

Chelsea have knocked back an opening loan bid from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, setting the tone for what looks like a hard‑fought negotiation over the Ukrainian’s future.

The Championship club tabled a proposal for a season-long loan, but the offer fell well short of Chelsea’s expectations. Talks have not collapsed, though. Discussions are ongoing, and Mudryk is understood to be keen on a move to Elland Road as he looks for a fresh start and regular football.

What is clear: the 25-year-old has accepted he needs a year away from Stamford Bridge to rebuild his match fitness and career rhythm.

A career stalled, a comeback planned

Mudryk’s trajectory was dramatically halted by a positive test for the banned substance meldonium, which led to a 20-month spell out of the game. His suspension ended in July, and since then he has been edging his way back under new Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso.

He featured on the club’s pre-season tour, mostly from the bench, as the staff tested his sharpness and conditioning after such a long absence. Those minutes have not been enough to guarantee him a major role this season, but they were a first step in a comeback that now looks likely to continue elsewhere.

In recent conversations with the club, Mudryk has made one thing clear: his preference is to stay in the Premier League. That stance has shaped the market around him.

Leeds push to the front of the queue

Interest has not been in short supply. Strasbourg, part of the same BlueCo ownership group as Chelsea, have been in the frame, along with clubs in Italy. Yet Leeds have moved into pole position.

Why Leeds? Crucially, they are prepared to take Mudryk on a straight loan with no option to buy. That suits Chelsea, who want to retain control over a player they signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 for an initial £61m, while also shifting his salary off the books for the season.

Leeds have already been busy this summer, reshaping Daniel Farke’s squad. Harry Wilson has arrived from Fulham to bolster the attack, Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo strengthens the centre of defence, James Trafford has joined from Manchester City in goal, and Nico Elvedi has been brought in from Borussia Monchengladbach. Adding Mudryk would give them another high‑ceiling attacking option as they push for promotion.

Interest in Chelsea striker Liam Delap from Leeds has cooled, but their focus on Stamford Bridge has not disappeared. Mudryk is now the key target.

Brentford, Coventry and Strasbourg wait

Leeds are not alone. Brentford, long-term admirers of Mudryk, remain in the background. The Bees tried to sign him several months before Chelsea eventually won the race to land him from Shakhtar and have kept a close eye on his situation.

Their latest approach stalled on one sticking point: Brentford wanted an option to make the move permanent. Chelsea refused, unwilling to lock in a cut-price exit for a player they still view as an asset with resale value if he can rediscover his form.

Coventry City have also expressed interest, sensing an opportunity to add top-level talent to their squad, while Strasbourg stay in the conversation as a logical landing spot within the BlueCo network. Chelsea, for their part, are exploring sending other players to the French club, including midfielder Dario Essugo, as they look to spread minutes and development opportunities across the group.

Chelsea’s stance: loan almost certain, but door not shut

Inside Chelsea, the expectation is that Mudryk will leave on loan before the window closes. A season at Leeds, or elsewhere, would offer him the chance to play regularly, regain his edge and prove he can still live up to the hype that surrounded his move from Shakhtar.

Yet the club have not completely ruled out him staying put if the right offer does not materialise. For now, though, the message is firm: no bargain deals, no easy purchase options.

Leeds know the terms. They are willing to accept them. The only question left is whether the two clubs can finally land on a package that gets Mudryk running down the wing at Elland Road – and gives his stalled Premier League story a second act.
