Tolu Arokodare's Impact in Ajax's 4-2 Victory Over Sion
Tolu Arokodare needed just a few minutes to turn a tight European tie into a personal statement.
Thrown on in the 72nd minute for Marcos Leonardo, the Nigeria international seized Ajax’s UEFA Europa Conference League playoff clash against Sion and bent it to his will. Fresh legs, fresh ideas, ruthless execution.
Two minutes after stepping onto the pitch, he struck. Ajax’s third goal of the night, a crucial cushion in a keenly contested 4-2 victory, came from the substitute who refused to ease his way into the game. He attacked it instead.
The impact didn’t stop there. As Sion chased a way back, Arokodare kept stretching the game, dragging defenders into places they didn’t want to go. With three minutes left, he picked his moment again, this time as creator, laying the ball on for Davy Klaassen to bury Ajax’s fourth and kill the contest.
On the touchline, Míchel Sánchez had exactly what every manager wants from a substitute: urgency, discipline, and end product.
“Tolu brought a lot of energy when he came on. He works hard, he scores and he helps us,” Sánchez told Ajax Life, as quoted by Goal. The praise didn’t stop at his football. “He has a good character. I think he is a nice boy. I hope he keeps helping us in this way.”
For a player fighting to carve out a permanent place in an Ajax side with no shortage of attacking options, nights like this matter. One goal, one assist, and a manager publicly backing his mentality as much as his numbers.
If this is the standard Arokodare can maintain, Sánchez’s “nice boy” might soon become one of Ajax’s most difficult players to leave out.
