Northampton Town Signs Leicester Striker Nathan Opoku
Northampton Town have moved to sharpen their attacking edge with the signing of Leicester City forward Nathan Opoku on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
The 25-year-old Ghanaian arrives at Sixfields after a winding route through college football in the United States and loan spells in Belgium and League Two. Leicester picked him up from Syracuse University in 2023, then immediately sent him to their Belgian sister club OH Leuven, where he struck five times.
Last season, Opoku learned the grind of the English lower leagues with Newport County. He finished as the Exiles’ top scorer, hitting six goals in 30 League Two appearances and carrying a sizeable share of their attacking burden.
Cobblers boss Chris Hogg made it clear this is no gamble on potential, but a targeted move for a player they have monitored closely.
“He has had a different journey to most players but that has helped him gain a good breadth of knowledge and experience and he is an excellent age,” Hogg told the club’s website. “He has spent the last three years at Leicester City and enjoyed loan spells both in Europe and last season in League Two so he knows the level and he has scored goals at this level.
“We have tracked Nathan for a while so we know all about him, we have done our homework and we know he is hardworking, has an excellent attitude and is a good person, he is a good character and a good player.”
Now comes the real test: turning that varied education into goals in a Northampton shirt, with the club betting that his unusual path has built a striker ready to deliver immediately.
