Tottenham Faces Injury Woes Ahead of Premier League Opener

Tottenham’s new Premier League season will start with a headache before a ball is even kicked.

Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro have both been ruled out of Saturday’s trip to Brentford, stripping Spurs of their captain and first vice-captain for the curtain-raiser in west London. The bad news did not stop there.

Pape Matar Sarr has also joined the absentee list after suffering a hamstring issue in the final build-up to the game.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi confirmed the setbacks on Friday, laying out the scale of the disruption to his back line and leadership group.

“Micky is not on the list for tomorrow, like Pedro Porro,” he said. “Pape Matar Sarr no, because he felt some pain in his hamstring today. Nothing serious, but we don’t take risks.”

Van de Ven’s situation offers at least a sliver of reassurance for Spurs fans.

“Today, he worked the group, and he is going very well,” De Zerbi explained. “He suffered a problem during the pre-season of Australia, I don’t know if it was the flight, but not a big problem.”

So he is close, but not close enough for Brentford.

De Zerbi stressed that he still has options at centre-back, name-checking Marcos Senesi and Ben Davies as ready to step in and start.

“We have [Marcos] Senesi, we have Ben Davies and in the right condition to play the game tomorrow,” he said.

The leadership picture is just as intriguing as the tactical one. With Van de Ven and Porro both out, Spurs are stripped of the top two names on their new captaincy ladder for the opening fixture.

Ben Davies, third in that hierarchy, is not expected to start. James Maddison, fourth in line, is short of match fitness.

That leaves 18-year-old Archie Gray as the unlikely candidate to wear the armband. Fifth on the leadership list and likely to deputise at right-back for Porro, the teenager could find himself leading Spurs out on day one of the season.

A reshuffled defence, a patched-up midfield, and a potential teenage captain: Tottenham’s campaign begins under strain, and under the spotlight.
