Celtic are closing in on a season-long loan for Chelsea teenager Landon Emenalo as Martin O’Neill’s rebuild gathers pace.

The 18-year-old, as reported by Stephen McGowan in The Herald, has been earmarked as cover and competition for Kieran Tierney at left-back and is in line to become the latest fresh face through the door at Celtic Park.

Chelsea prospect in frame for left-back role

Emenalo, son of former Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo, has risen through the ranks of the Stamford Bridge academy and already carries an international twist to his profile, having represented both England and the United States at youth level.

He has been viewed in various roles during his development – midfielder, central defender – but forced his way into the conversation at full-back this summer. Under Xabi Alonso, he caught the eye at left-back in three of Chelsea’s pre-season games, a run that appears to have accelerated Celtic’s interest as O’Neill looks to shore up a key area of the pitch.

If the deal is finalised, Emenalo will join a squad in the middle of an aggressive but targeted reshaping ahead of a crucial European tie.

O’Neill’s rebuild gathers speed

Celtic have already landed Egyptian winger Haissem Hassan in a £6 million move, tying the 22-year-old to a four-year contract with an option for a further season. The wide player arrives with expectations of making an immediate impact, but he is far from the only new arrival on the way.

German Under-21 midfielder Mika Baur has travelled to Glasgow and is scheduled to undergo a medical as he edges closer to completing his switch. His signing would add energy and depth in the middle of the park, another area O’Neill has clearly targeted.

Those deals sit on top of earlier summer business. Camilo Duran and Danish striker Kasper Høgh have already been added, and now Hassan, Baur and Emenalo could all be in place before next week’s Champions League play-off first leg against LASK Linz. The timing is deliberate: O’Neill wants his squad settled before the European stakes rise.

He has been consistent in his message – quality over quantity. Celtic are still in the market for a goalkeeper, but there is no sense of chasing bodies for the sake of it. Every signing is meant to tighten the squad around a demanding campaign at home and abroad.

Big bids and hard lines on exits

While the arrivals dominate the headlines, there is serious interest in some of Celtic’s key assets.

West Ham are expected to return with an improved package worth £25 million for Arne Engels. The Premier League side have identified the midfielder as a major target and are preparing to test Celtic’s resolve again.

On the opposite flank of the team, Celtic are bracing themselves over Alistair Johnston. Everton have registered their interest, but the Scottish champions are in no mood to sell on the cheap. The club value the Canadian right-back at more than £15 million, and Everton are now weighing up alternative options as they consider whether to push harder or walk away.

For O’Neill, the equation is clear. Reinforcements like Emenalo and Hassan are arriving, Baur is close, and the Champions League play-off looms. The next few days will reveal whether Celtic can strengthen without losing the pillars of a squad built to go deep into Europe and dominate domestically.
