Charlton Athletic Triumph Over Derby County in Season Opener

Tyreece Campbell lashed in a brilliant second-half winner as Charlton Athletic overturned a deficit to beat Derby County and open their league campaign in style – a sixth opening-day victory in eight seasons.

One sharp shift, one ruthless finish. Campbell rolled the ball onto his left foot on the edge of the box and drilled it low into the far corner, a precise strike that settled a tight contest and turned Derby’s long trip to London into a bruising one after a turbulent week off the pitch.

Derby arrived with the noise of an aborted takeover still ringing in their ears. The collapse of a proposed deal involving Saudi Arabian government official Turki Al-Sheikh had clipped some of the optimism that usually surrounds a fresh Championship season. On the pitch, though, John Eustace’s side initially parked the off-field drama and did what his teams tend to do: compete, scrap, and seize their moment.

They struck first. Sammie Szmodics, bright and busy, had already gone close when he combined neatly with Morris, carved out a yard of space and swept a clean finish into the net to put the Rams in front before the break. Charlton, though, refused to wilt.

The Addicks had started quickly without truly carving Derby open, but the pattern shifted after half-time. Campbell, already the standout performer, began to stretch the game. One fizzing delivery led to Dan McNamara thundering a half-volley goalwards, only for Charlie Taylor to throw himself in the way with a superb block.

The pressure finally told.

From a set-piece, Timothy Ouma should have levelled, glancing a free header wide when left unmarked at a corner. It felt a costly miss for a moment. Then Karlan Grant stepped up with a moment of quality, bending in an exquisite cross from the flank. Lloyd Jones attacked it with conviction, powering his header in from close range to drag Charlton level and ignite the home crowd.

Derby, rattled, tried to reset, but the momentum had swung.

Campbell sensed it. He kept demanding the ball, kept driving at the Rams’ back line. When the chance arrived, he didn’t hesitate – that crisp left-foot strike into the right corner was the finish of a player playing with complete belief, and it flipped the afternoon on its head.

Derby threw everything at Charlton late on. Oscar Fraulo forced a smart stop from Will Mannion as the visitors mounted a final surge, and Mannion stood tall again in stoppage time to deny Morris and protect the points.

The Rams trudged away from The Valley beaten on the opening day for the fourth season running. Charlton walked off to applause, an early statement made, their matchwinner already looking like the heartbeat of a side intent on making this campaign count.
