Chelsea's Defensive Shake-Up: Badiashile and Tosin Likely Exits

Chelsea’s final pre-season outing of the summer delivered goals, debuts and, quietly, a strong hint about who might not be sticking around.

A 3-1 win over Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge on Saturday looked straightforward enough on the surface. Joao Pedro struck twice, £116million signing Morgan Rogers marked his first appearance with a goal, and the home crowd got their first real look at several new faces.

But it was the numbers on the backs of those new faces that told the real story.

Shirt shuffle points to Badiashile and Tosin exits

Maxence Lacroix jogged out wearing No5. That number officially belongs to Benoit Badiashile. On the opposite flank, Pep Chavarria lined up with No29, the shirt Wesley Fofana has worn in recent seasons.

Fofana, returning from long-term injury, instead took No3 – recently vacated when Marc Cucurella left for Real Madrid.

Then came another clue. Valentin Barco, an unused substitute, had No4 on his back. That is the number Tosin Adarabioyo has used throughout pre-season.

Neither Badiashile nor Tosin made the matchday squad. Put together, the signs were hard to ignore.

Standard Sport understands both centre-backs are among a group of players Chelsea expect to move on before the transfer window closes. Tosin has interest from Benfica and other top-flight clubs, while Chelsea have agreed a loan with Napoli for Badiashile, including an option to buy at the end of the season.

The message felt clear: the hierarchy of Mauricio Pochettino’s defence is being redrawn.

Enzo’s mixed reception and new arrivals bed in

There was another notable moment when Enzo Fernandez stepped off the bench. The midfielder, back in action after his summer break, took the captain’s armband from Reece James and was met with a mixed reaction from the Stamford Bridge crowd. Some applause, some discontent. A reminder that Chelsea’s relationship with some of its biggest investments remains complicated.

Lacroix and Chavarria, meanwhile, eased into their first minutes for the club, their temporary numbers doubling as a public hint of their likely roles this season. Barco stayed on the bench but his allocation of No4 only underlined the sense of a defensive reset.

Chelsea keep official line… for now

For all the intrigue, Chelsea have already warned supporters not to read too much into pre-season shirt choices.

“Supporters should note that during pre-season, the shirt numbers worn by all players may not be representative of their finalised squad numbers for the 2026/27 campaign,” the club stated on their official website at the start of the month. “Further detail on this will be provided in due course.”

So, officially, Badiashile and Tosin have not been stripped of anything yet.

Unofficially? With their numbers on other players’ backs and their futures being negotiated elsewhere, the writing looks to be on the wall. The only real question now is how quickly Chelsea complete the defensive clear-out they have already started to telegraph.
