Chelsea Eye Emiliano Martínez Amid Goalkeeping Uncertainty

Chelsea have been offered the chance to move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, with the World Cup winner’s representatives sounding out the club as uncertainty deepens over Robert Sánchez’s position.

A source confirmed to ESPN that Martínez has been put on Chelsea’s radar after Villa effectively began planning for life without him. The Midlands club see new signing Zion Suzuki, the Japan international, as their long-term No. 1 and are ready to reshape their goalkeeping department around him.

Martínez’s future has been in flux all summer. A proposed move to Juventus collapsed earlier in August and he played no part in Villa’s bruising 4-0 defeat to Brighton on the Premier League’s opening weekend, left out of the squad entirely as talks and options swirled around him.

Now Chelsea have been dragged into the story.

Sánchez under pressure

The timing is no coincidence. Sánchez’s display in Monday’s chaotic 3-2 win over Fulham has sharpened the focus on Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation once again. The Spaniard was badly at fault for a tame effort from Josh King, allowing the shot to squirm through him and reigniting doubts that have followed him through multiple managers at Stamford Bridge.

According to a source, Chelsea are actively weighing up whether to move for Martínez before the transfer window closes, with internal discussions centring on whether the current No. 1 can be trusted in a season where the club expects to challenge at the top end of the table.

There had been hope that the solution might come from within. Mike Penders, the 21-year-old Belgian who spent last season on loan at Strasbourg, is viewed as a genuine prospect and could make his first-team debut against Luton in the Carabao Cup on Thursday. The plan, at least on paper, was for Penders to grow into a serious challenger to Sánchez over time.

The possible arrival of Martínez changes that calculation. An established Premier League goalkeeper, a senior Argentina international and a World Cup winner in 2022, he offers instant authority and experience in a position where Chelsea have lacked both. He also featured for Argentina as they finished runners-up to Spain at this summer’s tournament, underlining his continued standing at the highest level.

Sánchez, by contrast, has struggled to convince a succession of coaches. Mauricio Pochettino dropped him as first choice in 2024, turning instead to the relatively untested Serbia international Djordje Petrovic. Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior have also sidelined Sánchez at various points in response to dips in form.

Villa’s reset and financial squeeze

Villa’s stance on Martínez is shaped by more than just succession planning in goal. The club are open to a sale as they attempt to lower the average age of their squad and navigate financial regulations.

Martínez joined Villa from Arsenal in 2020 for £17 million ($23m) and has been a central figure in their rise, but the club’s need to generate funds this summer has been clear. Morgan Rogers has already left for Chelsea in a £117 million ($159m) deal, while Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne have also departed as Villa work to stay within the financial rules imposed by both UEFA and the Premier League.

Offloading a high-earning, high-value goalkeeper in his thirties fits that broader strategy. For Chelsea, it represents an opportunity to plug a problem position with a proven performer, if they decide to act.

Alonso calm on Enzo as City circle

While the goalkeeping debate rumbles on, Xabi Alonso moved to steady another storyline on Wednesday: the future of Enzo Fernández.

The Chelsea manager said he expects the Argentina midfielder to be involved against Luton despite continued speculation over a possible move to Manchester City. Chelsea value the 25-year-old at around £120 million ($163m), and his name has been a constant presence in the late-window rumour mill.

“Yes we expect that he's involved. He's training really well and he is a good professional,” Alonso told reporters when asked about Fernández’s availability.

Pressed on whether he wants the midfielder to stay, Alonso replied: “We want to have the best team possible. We know Enzo and his qualities. He has shown it and we have to wait. We'll think about tomorrow and let's see how things develop.”

Alonso also confirmed that Moisés Caicedo and Marco Palestra remain sidelined through injury, but Cole Palmer has been passed fit and is available.
