Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez Sale: Key to Late Reinforcements

Chelsea are ready to cash in on Enzo Fernandez – but only on their terms and only if his sale unlocks late reinforcements before the window slams shut.

Manchester City remain keen on the Argentina midfielder, undeterred by Chelsea’s missed August 14 deadline to trigger a £120m exit. There have been no formal talks between the clubs yet, but the situation moved up a gear when Fernandez was left out of Thursday night’s Carabao Cup win over Luton at Stamford Bridge.

He wasn’t injured. He was simply not there.

Enzo left out as City circle

Xabi Alonso insisted afterwards the omission was purely a football decision. No punishment. No stand-off.

“It was just because of the game,” the Chelsea head coach said after the second-round victory. “We have other players who need minutes.”

Pressed on when he chose to leave Fernandez out, Alonso replied: “In the afternoon. It’s a decision that I took.

“Enzo is a good professional. He’s training well and I have nothing to say about this. It was just decisions that we have to take thinking about the game that we were playing tonight. We will see for Sunday.”

That “we will see for Sunday” – ahead of Brighton’s visit – hangs over the whole saga. Chelsea are open to a sale if City pay what they want and, crucially, if they can strengthen the squad before the deadline.

Chelsea had previously agreed with Fernandez’s camp that he could go for £120m by August 14. City never came. The clock moved on. The interest has not.

Midfield arms race

Both clubs are scouring the same patch of the market.

Chelsea are looking at Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as potential midfield additions. Both clubs currently regard those players as unsellable, which makes Chelsea’s task complicated if they do decide to cash in on Fernandez.

City also have Scott on their list, alongside Roma’s Manu Kone, as they scramble to rebuild the heart of their team.

They have to. Rodri has already gone to Barcelona this month, ripping out the anchor of Pep Guardiola’s midfield. Nico Gonzalez has joined Newcastle in a deal worth up to £50m, Tijjani Reijnders has left for Al Qadsiah for £51m, and Bernardo Silva walked away at the end of his contract before signing for Real Madrid.

That is a core, dismantled.

City have not stood still, though. This week they completed an £86m move for Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille – a world-record fee for a teenager – and last month England international Elliot Anderson arrived from Nottingham Forest for £116m.

Even with those headline deals, central midfield remains the live issue. Fernandez, a World Cup winner with Premier League pedigree, fits the profile. The question is whether City test Chelsea’s resolve in time – and how high the London club push the price now that the original £120m deadline has passed.

Alonso, for his part, has been clear he is “prepared for whatever” happens with players who could leave before the window shuts. Prepared or not, losing Fernandez without a replacement would be a brutal hit.

Martinez move turns up heat on Chelsea keepers

While Fernandez’s future dominates the headlines, Chelsea have moved decisively in goal.

The club have agreed a £7.5m deal with Aston Villa to sign Emi Martinez. The move comes after current No 1 Robert Sanchez was heavily criticised for an error in Monday’s win at Fulham, a mistake that sharpened debate over Chelsea’s goalkeeping hierarchy.

Martinez needed a new home once Villa brought in Zion Suzuki from Parma for close to £30m, a signing that pushed the Argentine down the pecking order. Juventus had looked at Martinez earlier in the window but opted instead for Guglielmo Vicario from Spurs.

Chelsea have now stepped in, and the ripple effect will be felt inside Stamford Bridge. Sanchez started at Fulham. Mike Penders got the nod in the Carabao Cup tie against Luton. With Martinez on his way, both now face serious uncertainty over their roles for the rest of the season.

One big decision in midfield. Another in goal. The window is almost shut, but Chelsea’s most important calls may be the ones still to come.
