Chelsea Furious as Monaco Cancels €55m Lamine Camara Transfer After Liverpool Contact

Chelsea were stunned when Monaco abruptly cancelled the €55 million (£47 million) transfer for Senegalese midfielder Lamine Camara on deadline day. The Blues had agreed terms to bring in Camara as a replacement for Enzo Fernandez, who moved to Manchester City. However, after contact from Liverpool, Monaco backed out at the last minute.

Last-Minute Collapse

The move seemed set after Chelsea and Monaco settled on the fee. Chelsea pushed hard for Camara following Fernandez’s £125 million departure. Initially, Monaco rejected two Chelsea offers but then faced urgent financial pressure. This was partly due to complications in the proposed £40 million transfer of Folarin Balogun to Everton, which left Monaco scrambling for funds.

This opened a window for Chelsea to agree a quick deal at a lower price just hours before the Premier League transfer deadline. Yet, despite a written agreement between clubs, Monaco pulled out. Later, Everton renegotiated Balogun's transfer on reduced terms, easing Monaco’s financial strain. In an unexpected twist, Balogun declined the Everton move after the deadline, remaining in France and leaving Chelsea empty-handed, according to talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs.

Chelsea's Anger Over Monaco's Withdrawal

Ben Jacobs reports that Chelsea are furious with Monaco’s late reversal, considering it highly unprofessional. Chelsea honored their own written agreement by allowing Fernandez’s record £125 million move to City despite Monaco backing out of their deal. Monaco reportedly believed they could demand a €70 million fee for Camara later and were encouraged by interest from Liverpool, although Liverpool did not directly interfere with Chelsea’s negotiations.

Xabi Alonso Faces Midfield Crisis

Xabi Alonso now has a serious problem. Chelsea sold Fernandez without securing a replacement, weakening their midfield significantly. Earlier attempts to sign Manu Kone were blocked by Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini. The shortage was clear during Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Brighton, where Moises Caicedo got injured after coming on as a substitute, joining Jordan Henderson on the sidelines.

Romeo Lavia has only recently returned from injury, and new signing Valentin Barco lacks experience. Alonso has had to play right-backs Reece James and Malo Gusto in central midfield roles to cover gaps.

Alonso faces the challenge of managing a weakened squad for the early Premier League fixtures. Without Fernandez or Camara, Chelsea must rely on improvised solutions and hope for speedy recoveries from Caicedo and Henderson.
