Chelsea are scrambling to plug the Enzo Fernandez-shaped hole in their midfield – and Georginio Wijnaldum has suddenly emerged as a serious option.

Deadline day at Stamford Bridge was chaotic even by Chelsea’s recent standards. Enzo Fernandez walked out for Manchester City in a record £125million move, and the club’s attempt to land Monaco’s Lamine Camara collapsed before the window slammed shut.

That double blow has left Xabi Alonso short in the middle of the pitch just two games into his Premier League reign. With no chance of going back into the market, Chelsea have been forced down a different path: free agents.

At the top of that list sits a familiar Premier League face.

Wijnaldum on Chelsea’s radar

According to Foot Mercato, Chelsea have made contact with Georginio Wijnaldum as they explore bringing the 35-year-old back to England. The Dutch midfielder, who left Liverpool in 2021 after a hugely successful spell under Jurgen Klopp, is available after departing Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in the summer.

Alonso views Wijnaldum as a short-term solution, a steady hand with proven pedigree in the division. The Dutchman won the Premier League title with Liverpool in 2020 and built a reputation as one of the league’s most reliable, big-game midfielders.

Across his spells with Newcastle and Liverpool, Wijnaldum racked up 277 appearances in English football, chipping in with crucial goals and anchoring one of the most effective midfields in Europe at Anfield.

His numbers in Saudi Arabia last season suggest there is still fuel in the tank: 17 goals in 34 outings for Al-Ettifaq. It wasn’t enough to trigger a new deal there, but it has clearly kept him on the radar of clubs looking for experience and end product.

Alonso’s midfield puzzle

Alonso has wasted no time imposing his own ideas at Chelsea. So far this season, Romeo Lavia has started both games in central midfield, with Reece James and Cole Palmer used alongside him as part of a flexible setup.

Enzo, amid intense speculation over his future, had already been left out of the side before his move to City was confirmed.

Even after sanctioning the sale of a World Cup winner, Alonso insisted he would not compromise the wider project.

Speaking after Chelsea’s wild 4-3 win over Brighton, the new head coach said: "We will see. We want the best for team. If anything that will happen or develop, we are not sure. We are preparing for all the scenarios, but I know that from Wednesday, we have a team to challenge and I want to win."

The problem is that his options are thinning. Moises Caicedo, the £115m signing expected to be a cornerstone of Chelsea’s midfield, limped off on Sunday, raising fresh concerns over depth in the engine room.

So Chelsea now stare at a familiar question with an unfamiliar answer: can a 35-year-old former Liverpool stalwart become the stopgap that keeps Alonso’s project on track?
