Chelsea Pursues Italy Defender Honest Ahanor

Chelsea have moved early in the race for Honest Ahanor, opening preliminary talks with Atalanta and the Italy defender’s representatives as they explore another raid on Bergamo.

The London club have identified the 18-year-old as a major target, with La Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that initial contact has already been made with both Atalanta and the player’s entourage.

Atalanta dig in after Brighton rejection

If Chelsea want him, they will have to break through some serious resistance. Atalanta already turned down a €34m bid from Brighton earlier in the summer, a clear signal of how highly they value Ahanor.

Sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has been consistent: he does not want to lose any of the club’s best or most promising talents, and Ahanor is firmly in that category. In July, Giuntoli reiterated that stance, underlining Atalanta’s intention to keep their core together as a new cycle begins.

Ahanor only arrived in Bergamo in 2025, signed from Genoa in a €16m deal, but his rise has been rapid.

Versatile, left-sided and already an Italy international

Left wing-back or centre-back, Ahanor offers options. He is particularly comfortable as the left-sided defender in a three-man back line, a profile that is increasingly coveted at the top level.

That versatility has already translated into minutes. He has made 28 Serie A appearances for Atalanta and, in June, earned his first senior Italy cap under caretaker coach Silvio Baldini, capping a whirlwind year in his development.

His performances have not gone unnoticed outside Italy either. From Coppa Italia battles in Bergamo to Champions League nights in Paris, Ahanor has been exposed early to high-pressure football.

Giuntoli and Sarri era begins in Bergamo

This tug of war comes just as Atalanta are reshaping themselves. Giuntoli has started his first season in charge of the club’s sporting direction and has been reunited with Maurizio Sarri, who has taken over as head coach. The pair previously worked together at Napoli, where they built one of Serie A’s most attractive sides.

Their task now is to push Atalanta forward without sacrificing the young core that gives the project its edge. Ahanor sits right at the heart of that dilemma.

Chelsea return to a familiar market

Chelsea know the Atalanta boardroom well. The two clubs have already struck a major deal this summer, with Marco Palestra leaving the Gewiss Stadium for Stamford Bridge in a €60m transfer.

That agreement has laid the groundwork for fresh conversations. The Blues have tested the waters again, this time for Ahanor, aware that prising him away will likely demand a significant fee and a persuasive sporting project.

Atalanta have made their position clear. Chelsea have made their interest clear. The next move, and the price of one of Italy’s most promising young defenders, now hangs in the balance.
