Chelsea have moved decisively for Roma midfielder Manu Kone, with multiple reports indicating the London club have agreed personal terms with the 25-year-old.

FootballTransfers report that Chelsea have settled the player’s side of the deal and are now pushing hard to strike an agreement with Roma before the window shuts. French journalist Santi Aouna backed that up, confirming that Chelsea have made official contact with the Serie A club and that talks are ongoing over a transfer.

The Blues’ stance is clear. They are prepared to let Enzo Fernandez go – but only if two conditions are met: City must hit their £120m valuation, and Chelsea must have a “worthy” replacement through the door first. Kone has rapidly moved to the top of that list.

Conflicting figures, same direction

The money on the table is already serious.

Nico Schira reported that Chelsea have lodged a bid worth €65m (around £56m) for Kone, though he added a key complication: Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini considers the midfielder “non-transferable”. In other words, Chelsea are trying to prise away a cornerstone of Roma’s project.

Schira also stressed that the final call will rest with Kone himself and Roma owner Dan Friedkin. If either digs in, the deal dies.

Yet the needle is moving. Gianluca Di Marzio has since described the negotiations between Chelsea and Roma as an “advanced” deal, while suggesting the final fee will come in lower than Schira’s figure – around £52m rather than £56m. Di Marzio also noted that Gittens is close to joining Roma on loan, adding another layer to the talks between the clubs.

The exact number may still be in flux, but the direction of travel is unmistakable: Chelsea want Kone, and they are deep in negotiations to get him.

Enzo’s path to Man City

All of this circles back to Enzo Fernandez.

If Chelsea close Kone, the dominoes start to fall. City are ready to make the Argentina international their record signing at £120m, a fee that would also make him the most expensive midfielder in football history.

Fernandez is pushing for the move and wants to work under Pep Guardiola. Chelsea, for their part, are not standing in his way as long as their conditions are met. Secure the replacement. Secure the fee. Then let the deal happen.

Roma’s reluctance is the final barrier. If they hold firm and refuse to cash in on Kone, Chelsea’s stance on Enzo hardens. If they yield, even reluctantly, Fernandez’s route to the Etihad suddenly looks wide open.

The numbers are enormous, the stakes even higher. Now it comes down to one midfielder’s decision in Rome – and whether that choice sends Enzo Fernandez straight into Manchester City’s midfield for a record-breaking fee.
