Chelsea Reject Leeds’ Opening Bid for Mudryk

Chelsea have turned down an opening offer from Leeds United for Mykhailo Mudryk, with the initial proposal described as falling well short of the London club’s expectations, according to BBC Sport. Talks, though, are very much alive.

Mudryk wants this. Badly. After 20 months out of the game following a positive test for the banned substance meldonium, the winger is desperate for regular football and sees Elland Road as his route back to a full-speed career.

Leeds have surged to the front of the queue because they are prepared to take him on a straight loan with no option to buy. That detail matters. It allows Chelsea to keep long-term control of a player they committed an initial £62 million to in 2023, while still clearing space in Xabi Alonso’s increasingly crowded squad.

If the clubs can finally align on the terms, Mudryk would become Daniel Farke’s fifth signing of the summer. The timing is tight: Leeds open their Premier League campaign at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, and Farke wants another weapon in wide areas.

He already has four new faces through the door: Harry Wilson, Tarik Muharemovic, James Trafford and Nico Elvedi. Mudryk would add something different – raw pace, direct running, and a point to prove.

Chelsea’s clear-out gathers pace

While Leeds push to reshape their attack, Chelsea are busy hacking down the size of Alonso’s squad before the deadline. The exits are stacking up.

  • Axel Disasi has sealed a move to Crystal Palace.
  • Benoit Badiashile is heading for Napoli.
  • Atletico Madrid are closing in on a £65m deal for Nicolas Jackson.
  • Others, such as Liam Delap and Dario Essugo, are still waiting to discover whether they are part of Alonso’s plans or the next names on the departure list.

The pressure on Chelsea to make decisions is rising, but Alonso is refusing to be rushed. Addressing the speculation around Mudryk, he said: “We will see, we still have time to decide and we don't have to rush on many decisions and at the right time, we will take them. At the moment, not yet.”

For now, Mudryk remains in full training with the first-team squad at Cobham, staying fit and visible while his representatives work behind the scenes to nail down his next move.

Leeds lead, but rivals circle

Leeds are not alone. Other clubs are watching closely, waiting to see if Chelsea’s stance softens.

Brentford tested the waters earlier in the window, but their loan proposal included an option to buy – a condition Chelsea flatly rejected. Championship side Coventry City also retain an interest as they prepare to face Arsenal in the season’s curtain-raiser on Friday night.

Options on the continent exist but look distant. A switch to Strasbourg or a move to Serie A has faded in likelihood, with the 25-year-old understood to favour staying in England. The Premier League, and the intensity that comes with it, remains his priority.

So the situation tightens. Leeds are working on a revised offer, Chelsea are holding out for the right package, and Mudryk is waiting for the green light that could relaunch his career in front of the Elland Road crowd.

With the deadline looming and both clubs under pressure to finalise their squads, the next few days will decide whether Mudryk’s restart comes in white or somewhere else entirely.
