Chelsea Set to Sell Delap for £50 Million After Tough First Season

Chelsea are prepared to cut ties with Delap just a year after bringing him to Stamford Bridge, with the club placing a £50 million price tag on the striker as they trim down an overloaded squad ahead of the new campaign.

The Blues triggered a £30m release clause to sign Delap from Ipswich Town only 12 months ago. Now, senior figures are open to a sale if that valuation is met, with several Premier League clubs circling. Everton and Nottingham Forest are keeping a particularly close eye on the situation as they assess their attacking options.

Delap’s first year in west London never really caught fire. He managed only two goals in all competitions during a difficult debut season, one that ended with Chelsea missing out on European qualification and losing to Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Struggling to convince Alonso

Pre-season has not shifted the narrative. Delap has found it hard to make an impression on Xabi Alonso during the summer schedule, and his long-term role under the new head coach is increasingly unclear.

Alonso is weighing up his attacking department before the transfer window closes on September 1, and Delap now sits high on the list of potential departures. The message is blunt: either he plays regularly elsewhere, or he risks slipping into a secondary role at Chelsea as the Premier League kicks off.

Everton have already been flagged as a potentially ideal landing spot. Former Toffees scout Bryan King has previously pointed to Romelu Lukaku’s transformative loan spell at Goodison Park as a template Delap could follow, highlighting how the Belgian “went on loan and really made his name up at Everton”.

Forest, meanwhile, are also monitoring the situation, sensing an opportunity if Chelsea soften their stance or if the market moves in their favour.

Attack under reconstruction

Delap’s possible exit forms part of a broader reset of Chelsea’s forward line. The club want to streamline what they see as a bloated attacking group, which currently includes Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu. Both are attracting interest for loan and permanent moves, underlining the scale of the shake-up under way.

For Delap, Chelsea’s preference is clear: a permanent sale if a club steps up with £50m. That would bank a sizeable profit 12 months after his arrival and free up space and wages for Alonso to reshape the frontline in his image.

Defensive clear-out gathers pace

The overhaul is not limited to the forwards. Chelsea are also deep in talks over several defensive exits as they try to bring balance to a swollen squad.

Negotiations continue regarding the futures of Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi, with both centre-backs candidates to move on before the deadline. Tosin Adarabioyo, signed earlier in the window, is already drawing interest from Benfica, who are exploring a deal.

The club are also weighing loan moves for youngsters Mamadou Sarr and Aaron Anselmino, keen to secure regular minutes for the pair rather than leave them on the fringes at Cobham.

All of this leaves Alonso with major calls to make before September 1. The structure of his squad – and Delap’s place within it – will be shaped in the coming weeks as offers arrive and negotiations advance.

For Delap, the stakes are obvious. Stay and risk becoming an afterthought, or move and try to relaunch a stalled Premier League career. With Everton and Nottingham Forest considering formal proposals, the next decision he makes could define the trajectory of his time at the top level.
