Chido Obi: Manchester United's Rising Star Linked with Willem II Loan Move

Manchester United’s deadline day passed without the expected late scramble for signings – but Old Trafford might still see one more door swing open, this time for an exit.

Willem II are pushing hard to take 18-year-old forward Chido Obi on loan before the Eredivisie window slams shut at 23:59 CEST on Wednesday, according to The Athletic. Talks are advanced enough for the Dutch club to have lodged a formal proposal for a season-long deal, with the pitch to the player crystal clear: come to Tilburg and play regular senior football.

United spent big earlier in the summer, bringing in Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans as part of a significant rebuild. When deadline day arrived, though, Michael Carrick chose stability over late drama, resisting the urge to add more defensive or attacking options. The decision left a section of the fanbase frustrated, but it also sharpened the focus on outgoings – especially for young talents hovering between academy and first team.

Obi sits right in that space. The Denmark Under-21 international has already had a taste of the big stage, making eight senior appearances under former manager Ruben Amorim. Those minutes came quickly, perhaps too quickly. The general feeling around the club was that the step up arrived a fraction early in his development, and he was eased back into the youth setup.

He didn’t sulk. He scored.

Across United’s Under-18 and Under-21 sides last season, Obi hit 20 goals in 37 matches, a return that underlined why so many scouts have circled his name. That output has convinced figures at Old Trafford that the next phase of his growth has to come against seasoned professionals, not teenagers.

Willem II believe they can be the launchpad. Dutch outlet Voetbal International report that the Eredivisie side view Obi as a major talent who can make an immediate impact. They have not been shy with the comparison either, drawing a line straight back to Alexander Isak. The Swedish striker used a blistering loan spell at Willem II to ignite his senior career, a precedent that will not be lost on Obi’s camp.

The interest in the teenager has not been limited to Tilburg. Feyenoord explored a move earlier in the window, testing the waters for a deal as they weighed up their attacking options. As the deadline looms, though, Willem II have surged ahead and now stand as clear favourites to secure his signature.

For United, a loan would tick several boxes: a competitive league, a club that has recently helped a young forward explode onto the European scene, and the promise of real minutes in a pressure environment. For Obi, it poses a sharper question.
