Chiefs Held Late in Ighodaro's Strong Pre-Season Performance

Behind closed doors, with no crowd noise and little information leaking out, Kaizer Chiefs’ latest pre-season outing still managed to carry a familiar theme: promise in patches, punished in the details.

Etiosa Ighodaro, the new focal point in attack, gave Amakhosi a 77th-minute lead, finishing the kind of chance coaches love to see at this stage of preparation. A striker in rhythm, a team finally rewarded. For a while, it looked like the decisive moment.

Then the old problem resurfaced.

With the game drifting towards a narrow win, Chiefs let it slip in the 89th minute. Findlay Curtis found just enough space and sent a dipping effort over new signing Renaldo Leaner, the ball dropping cruelly inside the far post. From control to frustration in a heartbeat.

New Faces, Old Questions

Arthur Zwane’s side – led by captain Brandon Petersen in goal – started with a mix of established names and players eager to stake a claim: Monyane and Mako out wide, Miguel and Msimango in central areas, Ndlovu and Maboe offering legs in midfield, Baartman and Vilakazi supporting the creative pairing of Chislett and Silva.

The second half turned into a rolling audition.

Leaner, one of the headline arrivals, came on and immediately found himself under the microscope, beaten late by Curtis’ strike. Around him, Pule Mmodi, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Zitha Kwinika, Asanele Velebayi, Reeve Frosler and Kabelo Nkgwesa all logged minutes, a clear sign that the technical team wanted to stretch the squad and test combinations rather than simply chase a result.

The pattern, though, was telling: Chiefs created enough to edge ahead, but could not close the door when it mattered.

Tougher Tests on the Horizon

There will be no time to dwell.

On 15 July, Amakhosi face Al Kholood, who finished 14th in the Saudi Pro League last season – the kind of opponent that will ask physical and tactical questions of a squad still finding its rhythm. Three days later, on 18 July, the level sharpens again against Elche CF, 15th in LaLiga last term and survivors by a single point.

Those matches will not just be about fitness. They will reveal whether this Chiefs side can turn a 77th-minute lead into a full 90-minute performance, or whether late lapses will keep dragging them back toward the same old storyline.
