Christos Tzolis Transforms Arsenal's Attack

Christos Tzolis cost £34million. It already looks like daylight robbery.

Five games into his Arsenal career, the 24-year-old has four assists, one of them away to Napoli in the Champions League, and he has changed the feel of Mikel Arteta’s attack. The left wing, once a looming headache in the transfer department, suddenly looks secure. That shift could ripple through Arsenal’s entire recruitment plan – and straight towards Victor Osimhen.

Tzolis changes the equation

When Arsenal moved for Tzolis in the summer, the expectation was that he would add depth and competition. He has done far more than that. The Greece international has slotted in with authority, stretching defences, working relentlessly off the ball and, crucially, delivering in the final third.

Sporting director Andrea Berta predicted exactly this, talking up Tzolis’ “strong mentality” and his ability to “raise the technical level” of the side. Arteta has echoed that admiration, calling him “very, very smart” and praising the way he “can make good decisions when a lot of people tend to rush.”

Those aren’t throwaway lines. They explain why Arsenal’s transfer priorities may already be shifting.

Arsenal spent much of the last window circling Vinicius Jr, even setting aside a huge £140m budget to tempt him from Real Madrid before he signed a new deal at the Bernabéu. That money did not vanish. It now sits as a potential war chest for a different kind of signing.

From Vini Jr to a true No. 9

With Tzolis thriving on the left, the need for a blockbuster wide forward has eased. The glaring gap is through the middle.

According to The Telegraph, Arsenal raised Victor Osimhen’s name while in discussions with Galatasaray on other deals. The Turkish club had an eye on Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri. None of those moves came off in the end – Osimhen stayed put, Martinelli went to Al-Hilal, Nwaneri headed to Borussia Dortmund on loan – but the conversations underlined Arsenal’s interest in a new centre-forward.

That £140m originally earmarked for Vinicius Jr could now be redirected towards Osimhen. And as Tzolis continues to lock down the left flank, the logic only strengthens.

Havertz delivers, Gyokeres stalls

Arsenal are not short of bodies up front. Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres are both on the books as central options this season.

Havertz has started sharply, with three goals in his first five appearances, finally adding end product to the clever movement and link play that Arteta has always valued. He looks increasingly at home in Arsenal’s structure.

Gyokeres, though, has barely got going. Just 100 minutes, no goals, and little chance yet to convince that he can be the ruthless presence Arsenal crave in the box.

Arteta wants a striker who terrifies defences, who punishes half-chances, who lives on the shoulder and finishes with cold blood. Osimhen fits that profile as neatly as anyone in Europe.

Osimhen’s numbers do the talking

The Nigerian’s output for Galatasaray has been extraordinary. In 78 appearances he has scored 65 goals and provided 18 assists. Those are elite numbers in any league, and he has shown the same poise in European competition as he has domestically.

Composed in front of goal. Explosive in his movement. Relentless in his work rate. It is exactly the mix that would elevate Arsenal’s attack from dangerous to devastating.

The fee would be huge. The commitment, long term. But this is what title-chasing clubs do: they identify the missing piece and pay for it.

A statement waiting to be made

If Arsenal are still trading blows with Manchester City at the top of the table come January, a move for Osimhen would send a shockwave through the league. It would be a declaration that Arsenal are not just content to compete; they intend to dominate.

And the thought that every whipped cross and clever reverse pass from Tzolis could be aimed at Osimhen’s runs through the heart of a defence is a tantalising one for Arteta.
