Colby Bishop Rescues Portsmouth with Late Equalizer Against Blackburn

Colby Bishop stepped off the bench and out of a year-long slump to rescue Portsmouth, his late header sealing a 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers in a lively Championship clash at Fratton Park.

The striker, with just three goals in the past 12 months and recently relegated to a substitute role, found the net for the first time since April. It was a scruffy, instinctive touch rather than a classic centre-forward finish, but in the context of his drought it felt huge.

Portsmouth strike first, Blackburn bite back

The tempo was set almost immediately.

Blackburn’s Todd Cantwell forced a save after just 22 seconds, testing Daniel Bielica and hinting at the end-to-end contest to come. Yet it was Portsmouth who landed the first blow.

With less than three-and-a-half minutes gone, Jayden Meghoma whipped in a cross from the left. Sean McLoughlin’s headed clearance only reached the edge of the box, where Zak Swanson waited. The full-back watched the ball sit up and guided a controlled volley past an unsighted Balazs Toth to ignite Fratton Park.

Blackburn absorbed the early hit and answered quickly.

Harry Pickering picked out Oladapo Afolayan on the left corner of the area. The former St Pauli winger drove at Marlon Pack, skipped around him and drilled a low right-footed shot inside Bielica’s near post. The equaliser, coming inside the opening quarter of an hour, underlined Blackburn’s threat every time they broke.

The game never really settled. Chelsea loanee Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, impressive throughout, almost punished Toth four minutes before the interval. The 17-year-old latched onto a weak pass out from the Blackburn keeper and smashed a left-footed effort towards goal, only for Toth to redeem himself with a strong hand.

Bielica’s blunder, Morishita’s finish

Portsmouth emerged from the break on the front foot.

Kavuma-McQueen again drove at Blackburn and saw a 54th-minute shot pushed away by Toth. Pack followed up, only for his effort to be deflected wide. Fratton Park sensed a shift. Portsmouth were pressing higher, snapping into challenges, pinning Rovers back.

Then the mood flipped in an instant.

Three minutes later, Bielica miscued a routine clearance straight into danger. Kristi Montgomery intercepted, and Blackburn moved quickly. The ball found its way to Ryoya Morishita on the right side of the box. The Japan international took aim and drilled a right-footed strike across goal and into the bottom left corner.

From promise to punishment in seconds. Portsmouth’s good work undone by a single mistake.

Bishop breaks the drought

The setback could have flattened the hosts. Instead, Kavuma-McQueen dragged them back into it.

Operating on the right of the penalty area, he collected the ball, rolled his marker with a sharp spin and thundered a powerful strike towards goal. Bishop, alive in the six-yard box, instinctively threw his head at it and diverted the ball past Toth.

It was hardly a textbook header, but it was exactly what Portsmouth needed. Exactly what Bishop needed.

Fratton Park roared. A forward short on confidence suddenly had something tangible again, and Portsmouth had their equaliser.

Blackburn still carried a threat on the counter, but it was the home side who pushed hardest in the closing stages. Deep into stoppage time, Meghoma almost completed the turnaround, only for Toth to stand firm once more and beat away his effort.

Tight margins, tight table

The draw leaves Blackburn 16th on nine points, with Portsmouth a point and two places behind but with a game in hand. Neither side will feel entirely satisfied.

Blackburn will rue letting a lead slip. Portsmouth will look at Bielica’s error and missed chances and wonder how this wasn’t their statement home win.

But on a night when a mis-hit clearance almost decided everything, it was the flick of Bishop’s forehead that kept Pompey’s season from stalling and reopened a question that had started to fade: can he be their penalty-box predator again?
