Cristian Orozco has wasted no time showing Manchester United what they fought so hard to sign.

The Colombian midfielder, finally eligible to complete his move from Fortaleza after turning 18 this summer, has already marked his unofficial debut with a goal for the Under-21s in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa U21s.

He didn’t just sneak one in, either. Orozco was on target in a commanding 5-0 victory as United’s youngsters ramped up their preparations for the new season, offering a first real glimpse of the defensive midfielder the club have been tracking since last year.

Statement win, statement cameos

The scoreline told its own story. Villa’s youngsters were swept aside.

Chido Obi, already in form after a brace against Ipswich earlier this month, kept his hot streak going against another Premier League academy, again finding the net. Ashton Missin matched that output with two of his own, while Amir Ibragimov also got on the scoresheet as United ran riot.

In the middle of it all, Orozco added his name to the list. For a player signed primarily for his defensive instincts and leadership, getting off the mark so quickly will not go unnoticed.

Long chase, longer plan

United’s pursuit of Orozco was anything but casual. Director of football Jason Wilcox led an aggressive push to lure him from Colombia, convincing the Fortaleza prospect to swap his homeland for Old Trafford.

He arrived with pedigree, too. Orozco captained Colombia’s Under-17s and had already broken into Fortaleza’s first team, making five senior appearances. His last competitive outing came in May, in a Copa Colombia draw against Cucuta Deportivo.

But United have been clear: this is a long-term project, not a shortcut to plug a gap.

Despite the buzz around his arrival and early impact, the club intend to give him time to grow in the academy and development squads rather than thrusting him straight into the first-team spotlight.

Crowded path to the first team

The road to Erik ten Hag’s midfield is only getting busier.

Old Trafford chiefs have already backed Michael Carrick’s push to strengthen the centre of the pitch, with Andrey Santos arriving to add energy and drive. Youri Tielemans then followed, United activating the £35 million release clause in his Aston Villa contract to bring the Belgian back to the Premier League stage in red.

Those deals raise the bar for any young midfielder hoping to break through. For Orozco, it means patience will be essential.

United believe they have landed a teenage gem. The early signs in a quiet friendly at academy level hint at why they worked so hard to sign him.
