Cristian Romero Leaves Tottenham for Atletico Madrid in €40m Transfer

Cristian Romero has drawn a firm line under his Tottenham career, confirming his departure from north London after five turbulent, trophy-breaking seasons – with Atletico Madrid expected to be his next stop in a €40 million move.

The Argentina defender, never far from the spotlight or the referee’s notebook, announced his exit on Aug 14, bringing an end to a spell that mixed controversy with a defining moment in Spurs’ modern history.

“I leave with a heart full of memories and enormous pride for everything we lived and achieved together.”

He made it clear that his ambition on arrival had been to etch his name into Tottenham’s history, and that only silverware would truly do that.

“When I arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my name in this club’s history. I knew the only way was through hard work, sacrifice and achieving something that had seemed so difficult for so long: lifting a trophy again. And we did it.”

The defender did not shy away from the rough edges of his time in England – the red cards, the bans, the debates about his discipline – but refused to let those define his farewell.

“The journey wasn’t perfect, but I don’t want that to define my goodbye. I choose to remember the happy moments, the lessons, the people who stood by me and, above all, the love I received during these five years.”

Now, with Atletico Madrid poised to pay around €40 million for his services, Romero leaves Spurs as a polarising figure but an undeniably pivotal one – a captain who finally helped deliver the trophy the club had been chasing for nearly two decades.
